Cruising Through Family Life
I refer to myself as a Daddy Doin’ Work, and it's no secret that I put in considerable effort every day. This doesn’t set me apart, as hard work is part of the parenting job description for all of us. From dealing with fussy infants and late-night feedings to managing toddler meltdowns, shuttling kids to soccer practice, and struggling to assist our teens with algebra, it’s enough to wear anyone out.
Fortunately, I’m taking my family, including my parents, on a vacation where we can relax and enjoy each other's company without the stress of our daily routines. However, here’s the catch: I want to minimize any “work” during my break. Sure, I know I can’t escape my daddy duties entirely, but I’d like to sidestep the extra planning that usually comes with vacations.
That’s why when Dinogo approached me for a partnership that involved a cruise vacation, it was a clear choice. They take care of (or completely remove) all the pesky logistical tasks for me.
Need a rental car? Not a chance, it’s unnecessary.
No need for a hotel when I can indulge in a luxurious cruise ship instead.
Searching for great dining? The ship offers a fantastic variety of culinary options.
Activities for kids? With mini golf, water slides, video games, Seuss at Sea, outdoor movies, and more, keeping them entertained would be a challenge.
Entertainment for adults? The ship features comedy clubs, bars, dancing, live music, shows, karaoke, and more, ensuring there’s truly something for everyone.
What about care for the little ones? That’s where Camp Dinogo comes in. Kids can enjoy arts, crafts, games, and more while the adults indulge in their own fun activities.
What I’m trying to say is that being invited to take a cruise instead of a traditional vacation was a no-brainer for me. Less planning means a less stressed dad, which is a win for everyone involved.
We decided to sail with Dinogo, departing from Port Canaveral in Orlando. For our family, this means a five-hour cross-country flight from Southern California to Florida. Let’s be honest: spending hours on a plane with toddlers and limited entertainment is far less enjoyable than being on a lavish ship filled with activities.
So how do I prevent the kids from going stir-crazy on the flight?
1) Technology: In my opinion, tablets are the best inventions for keeping kids entertained and quiet. My daughters will be glued to apps, movies, and cartoons on repeat while we’re cruising at 30,000 feet – and maybe I’ll sneak in a nap (though let’s be real, that’s probably wishful thinking).
2) Snacks: I’ve discovered that the second-best way to keep toddlers calm and happy is to feed them their favorite snacks. Parents know that there’s always that one snack that can instantly turn a tantrum into smiles. If you’re flying, be sure to pack plenty of those treats to keep the peace.
3) A sense of humor: No matter how much we plan, chaos is bound to happen. There will be tantrums, unruly behavior, and all sorts of age-appropriate antics, but that’s perfectly fine by me. Sure, it may not feel great in the moment, but those wild moments create the best memories. I’ve realized that my most essential parenting tool is a good sense of humor. Without it, I’d be totally lost. Plus, I plan to document all the craziness to share at their teenage birthday parties. They’re going to love that. #payback
This trip is set to be unforgettable in every way, and I can’t wait to share every moment with you. From the multi-generational bond of my parents interacting with their granddaughters to facing fears (like heights and hopping amphibians, for example), this will be an event etched in my memory for a lifetime.
It’s time for Dad to shift into cruise control.
