Delta Air Lines Bids Farewell to These U.S. Airports
It’s the latest unfortunate trend in air travel—yet another airline has halted service to domestic hubs, a pattern we've been noticing quite frequently.
Delta Air Lines announced this week that, starting January 10, it will cease operations to:
- Grand Junction Regional Airport, Colorado
- Lincoln Airport, Nebraska
Additionally, the airline's seasonal flights to Yellowstone Regional Airport in Cody, Wyoming, were suspended as of October 2021.
“In light of the ongoing effects of the pandemic on travel demand, we have made the tough choice to suspend Delta Connection service to these areas. We are committed to rebooking customers with alternative arrangements or providing refunds as swiftly as possible,” Delta stated in a message to Dinogo.
Delta will also be cutting back on direct flights to several mainly Midwest airports. The airline is halting services from Detroit Metro Airport to La Crosse Regional Airport in Wisconsin and from Minneapolis−St. Paul International Airport to Sawyer International Airport in Michigan, starting January 10. Seasonal flights from Minneapolis−St. Paul to Montana’s Great Falls International Airport were suspended as of October.
However, service to these hubs will remain available through connecting flights with the airline’s regional partner, SkyWest, operating as Delta Connection. Delta will continue to serve Great Falls via Salt Lake City International Airport, La Crosse via Minneapolis−St. Paul, and Sawyer via Detroit.
This announcement follows similar moves by other major airlines, which are also reducing domestic service. Last month, American Airlines cut 27 routes from its domestic flight roster, with 18 of those originating from New York. United Airlines recently revealed that it is removing 12 U.S. routes as well.
American also confirmed just last week that it is cutting or delaying several international routes for next year due to an aircraft shortage.

However, Delta shared some good news regarding international travel. The airline is reinstating its flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Stockholm, Sweden, a return that has been five years in the making, according to the company.
Daily flights to Stockholm are set to commence on June 1, 2022, using Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
“Our priority is to reinstate the routes and destinations our customers cherish. Those planning their European vacations for next summer will find more routes, premium seating, and destinations in 2022,” Delta stated, suggesting that additional positive developments in Europe may be on the horizon.
The airline announced plans to operate up to 70 daily flights to and from 21 European destinations from 10 U.S. airports next summer.
