How the Voting Process Works
Each year, in our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L invites readers to share their opinions on travel experiences worldwide, from hotels and resorts to cities, islands, and more. Over 186,000 readers participated in the 2024 survey, casting more than 700,000 votes across 8,700 different properties.
Hotels were categorized as resort hotels, city hotels, inns, or safari lodges, and rated based on the following criteria.
- Rooms and facilities
- Location
- Service
- Dining
- Value for money
For each category, participants rated inns as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. Final scores reflect the average of these ratings.
What Readers Adored
This year’s top inns shared some common trends, though each has its own unique charm. Coastal and lakeside inns stood out, with 10 of the top 15 near water. Countryside retreats like Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards (No. 8) in Virginia and the Farmhouse Inn (No. 9) in California also shined. Historical charm, like at the Inns of Aurora (No. 7) in New York, was a hit, but quirky spots like Holiday House in Palm Springs (No. 12) added personality to the list.
These inns made lasting impressions. A guest at Villa Mara (No. 2) in Carmel-by-the-Sea called it “the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in,” praising its yacht-like luxury. At the Willcox (No. 5) in South Carolina, a reader appreciated the “club-like atmosphere,” while another raved about the warm hospitality at Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards: “You’re treated with the utmost respect from arrival to departure. I can’t wait to return.” Discover more about this year’s top inn and the full list of the best in the continental U.S.
