Discover a luxurious camping experience in the heart of the Qatari desert. Here’s what it’s like

Stretching for miles, the vast desert landscape meets the endless blue sky. In the southeastern corner of Qatar, within the breathtaking Inland Sea nature reserve, the only sound you’ll hear is the gentle whisper of the wind or perhaps the distant rumble of 4X4 vehicles navigating the dunes.
In this tranquil environment, The Outpost Al Barari, a tented villa desert retreat, first opened its doors just over a year ago, coinciding with Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup.
This peaceful escape from the bustle of downtown Doha is one of several luxurious desert getaways in Qatar, which is looking to leverage its global visibility during the World Cup to attract tourists seeking a sunny, year-round destination.
Qatar offers other unique desert stays, including the sprawling Hilton Salwa Resort, one of the largest resort complexes in the Middle East. Opened in 2021, it boasts its own theme park and is located along a remote coastline near the Saudi Arabian border.
While Salwa may seem as expansive as a small town, the compact Al Barari tented camp – true to its name – offers a sense of seclusion, almost like an outpost.
Desert camping is a beloved tradition in Qatar, with locals often setting up canvas retreats on weekends or during festivals. These range from basic setups to extravagant camps with all the modern comforts. Al Barari undoubtedly falls into the luxury category.
An oasis of privacy and indulgence

Arriving at the resort feels like discovering a hidden oasis in the heart of the wilderness.
This experience goes far beyond simple glamping.
Each accommodation is thoughtfully designed to provide both privacy and luxury, with many featuring private swimming pools as the ultimate indulgence.
Mohammad Taha Nashwan, general manager of The Outpost Al Barari, shares with Dinogo that the resort took two years to build and is situated about 66 kilometers (41 miles) south of Hamad International Airport, Qatar's primary gateway.
Nashwan explains that the aim was to craft an experience that would resonate with both locals and international guests by blending 'luxury hospitality with utmost privacy' while celebrating Qatar's rich natural beauty and cultural heritage.
A true connection with nature

The Outpost Al Barari's main allure lies in the chance to immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding landscape and reconnect with nature.
Guests have the opportunity to embark on thrilling desert safaris to the Inland Sea, a striking tidal inlet located further south near the Saudi Arabian border.
Guests can choose to join a guided nature walk through the dunes and beyond, where they can learn about the desert’s wildlife – from spiny-tailed lizards and desert foxes to ospreys and migratory waterfowl.
Fitness enthusiasts can also sign up for tailored yoga sessions and workouts on the sandy slopes, paired with a three-day nutrition and wellness program.
For some extra fun, guests can enjoy sand surfing, fat biking, and camel rides. Thrill-seekers can even take to the skies with hot air balloon rides, offering breathtaking views of the vast sand dunes rolling into the horizon, meeting the turquoise sea.
In the cooler months, The Outpost becomes a favorite retreat for Qataris, offering an elegant, tranquil setting where they can escape the hustle and bustle of Doha for a weekend in the desert.
Outdoor cinema under the stars

Visitor Hasan Al Naimi described his stay at Al Barari as an 'adventure' that offers a chance to 'experience the traditional desert lifestyle' – but with a luxurious twist.
'You get to enjoy panoramic views of the golden dunes while relaxing in your private pool,' says the 47-year-old to Dinogo.
'It truly feels like an oasis,' he adds.
Al Barari goes to great lengths to make guests forget they’re surrounded by endless sand. The resort offers indulgent cream scones, aromatic Arabic coffee, and luxurious Cuban cigars. There’s also a Spa Tent with rejuvenating massages and a spacious communal pool that feels like a serene escape from the desert landscape.
The resort’s signature restaurant serves an innovative four-course menu that fuses Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian flavors. Guests can choose to dine indoors or under the stars, with romantic low lighting and a cozy open fireplace enhancing the experience.
One of the standout experiences is the outdoor cinema, where guests can enjoy classic films beneath the desert night sky. Relax by the fire pit in a cozy, rug-strewn area with handwoven pillows for a truly memorable evening.
Reaching The Outpost Al Barari from Doha takes about an hour by SUV. Guests can either drive themselves or opt for the resort's transport service, with pickup available at Al Meera on Sealine Beach. Those flying into Doha can arrange an airport transfer for an additional fee.
