Discover Kansas City in 5 Shops: From Ted Lasso T-Shirts to Antique Treasures and Civic Pride
In our 5 Shops series, we highlight our favorite independent retailers from some of the world’s most vibrant cities. Explore food markets, bookstores, vintage shops, and unique local designs, all offering a diverse selection of one-of-a-kind items.
Maybe it was Jason Sudeikis’ portrayal of Ted Lasso that brought my beloved hometown to your attention. Or perhaps it was Taylor Swift's surprise visit at a Kansas City Chiefs game. Or even the buzz about A$AP Rocky filming in the West Bottoms.
Regardless of how you learned about it, Kansas City—the City of Fountains, the Heart of America, the Paris of the Plains—will exceed your expectations. It's a place where sports, museums, art, music, and delicious food thrive equally. Whatever your interests, KC has it all.
One thing you must know about my hometown is the immense pride that Kansas City residents feel for their city. They wholeheartedly support local businesses, native talent, and anyone who develops a fondness for the area.
The civic pride here runs deep, evident in locals donning t-shirts that celebrate the city. For example, in the first episode of Ted Lasso, you'll spot KC native Sudeikis wearing the Three KC Joearthur Gatestack shirt.
Given this enthusiasm, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of fantastic places for local shopping. Here are some of my top recommendations.
Top spot for souvenirs: Westside Storey
Nestled in Kansas City's Westside, this shop offers an array of clever souvenirs like hats, pins, and candles, but most visitors come for its delightful selection of new and vintage Kansas City t-shirts.
You'll discover a wealth of locally crafted items celebrating Kansas City's civic pride and its diverse sports teams. This is also a prime spot to grab the beloved Charlie Hustle KC heart shirt, commonly seen worn by locals throughout the city.
Best for local design: Dear Society
Nestled in the vibrant Crossroads district, Dear Society was established in 2015. Here, the focus is on creating a sustainable wardrobe, featuring a mix of contemporary and vintage pieces that make for perfect statement items. You can also find a selection of small gifts like candles and stationery for those looking for compact souvenirs.
Owner Chancel Jezek shares on the shop's website her mission to highlight female designers and entrepreneurs, curating a minimal yet timeless collection that remains relevant in your closet for years. Currently, you'll find the sustainable fashion line Cvet Préri and artwork by local ceramic artist Katherine Moes displayed in the store.
If you're aiming to create a sustainable wardrobe, you can also book styling sessions to assist you in showcasing your existing pieces or selecting new ones that enhance your collection.
Best for vintage/thrift: the West Bottoms
The West Bottoms has gained attention recently as the backdrop for A$AP Rocky’s latest music video, along with rumors of Travis Kelce shopping for someone special at Fetch KC. In this historic area near the 12th Street Bridge, you'll discover charming antique shops like Vintage Posch and Bella Pantina lining the streets. Many of these shops have multiple levels filled with nooks to explore, offering such a vast array of items that it can be a bit overwhelming. Be sure to pace yourself and check ahead for store hours, as they vary. Most are open simultaneously during First Friday (the first weekend of each month).
Visit in the weeks before Halloween to experience old buildings transformed into multi-level haunted houses, offering a mix of thrills and chills.
Best for food: French Market
A quick drive across the state line into Kansas leads you to Prairie Village and the delightful French Market. Managed by the Quillec family, this market serves as the laid-back counterpart to their upscale and highly regarded restaurant, Café Provence, conveniently located just around the corner.
At the market, you can enjoy a café with a lovely patio, where you can indulge in French cuisine, pastries, and wine. The market area offers grab-and-go meals, treats, French imports, premium home goods, vintage finds, cookbooks, and beloved local KC specialties.
Best for books: Afterword
For literature enthusiasts, nothing beats the perfect blend of a cocktail and an engaging book discussion. At Afterword, you can enjoy both. Nestled in the Crossroads Arts District, this lively bar-and-bookstore serves up craft cocktails, mocktails, wine, and beer alongside shelves filled with works from both renowned and local authors.
