Discover Sydney in 5 Unique Shops: jewelry, gourmet treats, and souvenirs
In our 5 Shops series, we guide you to some of our favorite independent retailers in the world’s most vibrant cities. From bustling food markets to charming bookshops, vintage finds, and local designs, we highlight a diverse array of shops where you can discover one-of-a-kind treasures.
Sydney is an essential destination on any Australian itinerary, and for good reason. With its stunning harbor, visitors are immediately captivated. But beyond the city’s famous beaches and landmarks like the Opera House, it’s the relaxed atmosphere and refined elegance that truly make Sydney special.
As a lifelong Sydneysider who has returned to the city twice, I can vouch for its charm. The city pulses with an energizing vibe, featuring trendy bars nestled in hidden alleyways and casual cafés that spill onto sun-drenched sidewalks. The shopping scene thrives on a robust local arts and design community, with homegrown brands gaining global acclaim. Here, established names coexist with emerging talents, making every shopping excursion a potential discovery.
Whether you’re searching for a striking vintage jacket to make a statement, a quirky tote that prompts laughter, or a taste of local truffles to pamper your palate, here are a few of my favorite shops in Sydney.
Discover unique, illustrated gifts and souvenirs inspired by Australia at Squidinki. Natasha Bazika
Top choice for souvenirs: Squidinki
Sydney, like many cities, offers a variety of souvenirs. However, if you seek something more memorable than a fridge magnet or plush koala, visit the Squidinki gallery located in the Rocks, next to Frank Mac’s, a trendy basement gin bar with an Irish flair. The local illustrator and owner, Max Mendez, transforms Australia's beloved animals into humorous illustrations featured on cotton tote bags, porcelain mugs, greeting cards, and more. (Picture cockatoos in tutus and sharks in charcuterie delis.)
Tote bags are available for $32.95, while porcelain mugs retail for $24.95. I highly recommend the 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle of Sydney for $39.95, crafted from recycled materials.
Explore and purchase resin jewelry, bowls, and dishes at the original Dinosaur Designs location. Natasha Bazika
Top choice for local design: Dinosaur Designs
It's almost impossible to walk by Dinosaur Designs without being tempted to enter, as glossy bangles, vibrant necklaces, and earrings catch the eye. This Sydney-based resin studio is making waves internationally with locations in New York and London, but the original store in the Victorian-era Strand Arcade offers a uniquely enchanting shopping atmosphere thanks to its ornate architecture.
While some standout pieces like long necklaces can reach $520, there are also more budget-friendly options available, such as bangles for $50. Dishes and bowls priced around $60 make for beautiful additions to any dinner table.
Discover unique finds at the Wilde Merchant secondhand store. Natasha Bazika
Top pick for vintage: The Wilde Merchant
The vintage scene in Sydney is thriving, and The Wilde Merchant in Newtown exemplifies this trend. This new addition to the city’s collection of op shops (known as “opportunity shops” in Australia) is notable for its curated selection of rare vintage items and impressively organized layout—a rarity in many vintage stores.
Step inside to uncover a hidden gem of unique treasures. Specializing in vintage military apparel, high-quality Japanese denim, and stylish bomber jackets, there’s plenty of coolness to be found. Plus, you can also score shirts or jeans at reasonable prices.
When it comes to pricing, it varies. The unique pieces are displayed on the walls, which often means they come with a higher price tag compared to the items on the racks. However, there's something to suit every budget.
Bring home some luxurious treats from Gourmet Life in Darling Point. Natasha Bazika
Top food market: Gourmet Life
Sydney's weekend food markets are renowned, with places like the Carriageworks Farmers Market and Kirribili Markets leading the charge. Yet, options during the week can be limited. A short train ride to Darling Point offers a scenic walk with views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge leading you to Gourmet Life. Initially located in the historic Potts Point area, the store's new, larger location in Darling Point includes space for a wine wall and a cooking school, both of which are still in the works.
Here, you'll discover one of Australia's largest vinegar selections and the finest caviar. Owner Josh Rea has journeyed across the globe to source top-notch products for Sydney, including pasta sauces, sardines, condiments, and much more. The fresh local truffles are a must-try. Don't miss the cheese display—perfect for creating a gourmet picnic basket to enjoy at nearby Rushcutters Bay Park.
Enjoy taking your time to explore the extensive selection across three levels at Berkelouw Books. Natasha Bazika
Top spot for books: Berkelouw Books
Berkelouw Books in Paddington serves as a bookstore, secondhand book dealer, wine bar, café, and reading room, all housed across three floors. Originally established in Holland in the 19th century, the Berkelouw family brought their passion for books to Sydney after WWII. While its Oxford St location is deemed the flagship store, there are now seven additional branches throughout Sydney.
The ground floor features a stylish area filled with the latest titles and beloved classics. The second level is dedicated to coffee and wine, complete with tables for work or for getting lost in a book. Venture to the top floor, where you'll find shelves brimming with pre-loved books and a cozy reading room to enjoy them in.
Looking for some reading inspiration? As soon as you walk in, there's a wall displaying the books that the Berkelouw team is currently excited about.
