This year, the real question isn’t whether to stay or go, but whether to cook or have a festive meal delivered (Easter or Passover, depending on your celebration).

In recent weeks, restaurants across the US have undergone major changes to adapt, keeping their doors open and customers satisfied.

From shifting to takeout and delivery to curbside pickup, eateries of all types—whether casual delis or fine-dining spots—are reinventing classic holiday dishes like matzoh ball soup.

Tradition, now delivered.

As the stay-at-home order takes hold across the country this April, households celebrating Passover and Easter are adjusting their traditions, finding ways to keep their routines alive amid uncertain times.

One option is to place an order and relax while the meal is delivered to your door.

For years, Katz's Deli in Manhattan has provided a Passover menu, including its renowned brisket, as part of nationwide shipping packages. And this year, they’re doing the same.

For those in the New York area, a la carte delivery options are available.

If you usually brunch at The General Muir, a New York-style deli in Atlanta, you can now order its house-baked matzoh as part of a Passover prix fixe, available on April 8 and 9.

In Los Angeles, Akasha Restaurant is offering a mix of Passover essentials, from boxed matzo and haroset to vegan chopped liver, alongside a complete dinner for two that includes a Seder plate.

Jar offers a la carte Passover options, including its signature pot roast and chocolate-covered matzah with pecans and toffee for dessert.

For Judy and Lee Weiner, members of the Landings Golf Club on Skidaway Island near Savannah, Georgia, having a full Passover dinner is one of the changes they're adapting to this year.

Typically, the Weiners would host a potluck Seder with friends, but this year, they plan to use the club’s curbside pickup service. “We might host a Zoom Seder,” Judy says. “Otherwise, it’s too isolating.”

Holiday comfort.

Those who usually enjoy a grand Easter buffet or brunch at a restaurant may be opting for other comforting meals this year.

In New York, Amy Rizzo from the Upper East Side has had her Easter traditions turned upside down. 'My husband and I always go to church on Easter Sunday, then enjoy brunch at Sarabeth’s,' she shares.

However, with some restaurants like Sarabeth’s closing their doors, she’s exploring other options and preparing a backup plan.

'We’re trying to support restaurants when we can because we know they’re struggling,' Rizzo says. 'But if necessary, I’ll be cooking myself.'

For those in Manhattan seeking a bit of luxury for their Easter dinner, both Marea and Osteria Morini are offering spring-inspired prix fixe menus for pickup and delivery, including carrot cake.

Smaller restaurants and bakeries are making the best of the situation by offering creative alternatives.

Jacob's Pickles, a Southern eatery in Manhattan, will serve complete Easter and Passover dinners for one or two people. The menu includes deviled eggs, braised lamb shanks or brisket, with the option to add wine or growlers at half price.

In Nashville, catering company The Party Line is offering whole carrot cakes, egg-dyeing kits, and full Easter brunches for delivery.

Automatic Seafood & Oysters in Birmingham, Alabama, is supporting local vendors with its Easter pickup and delivery menu, featuring deviled farm eggs, peel-and-eat Gulf shrimp, and brown sugar cake topped with fresh strawberries.

Easy Tiger, the laid-back bakeshop and beer garden in Austin, Texas, will offer an Easter-themed menu, featuring asparagus and cheese quiche, fresh dinner rolls, and a personal-sized lemon tart.

With many home cooks feeling burnt out from the constant demand for family meals, a delivered Easter or Passover dinner might feel like the ultimate treat this year.
