The History of The Dragon Boat Festival

This festival boasts a rich history that spans over two millennia. One of the key legends behind this celebration is the renowned tale of Qu Yuan from the era of warring states.

As the story goes, Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet and a devoted official of the Chu state during the Warring States period. Born into an influential family, he held a significant position and served as the top adviser to the Chu Kingdom, dedicating his life to fortifying the state under the king's leadership.

During that period, Qu Yuan urged the King to form an alliance with the State of Qi. Instead, the King of Chu chose to ally with the invaders and banished Qu Yuan, an event documented in the historical text Shi Ji.

As the State of Qin rose to power in China, a disheartened Qu Yuan took his own life by drowning in the Miluo River. This tragic event is commemorated on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar.

Kind-hearted locals rushed to their boats in search of the unfortunate minister's body. They tossed dumplings into the river to prevent the fish from consuming Qu Yuan's remains.

This marked the origins of the festival that has evolved into the celebration we recognize today.
