So far, I have covered three out of the five trusted traveler programs aimed at helping passengers navigate security lines at U.S. airports and cross domestic borders more smoothly.
This week, I will explore SENTRI, the Mexican equivalent of Nexus, which is uniquely open to foreign travelers outside the U.S.
Here are the top five questions for this week:
1. What exactly is SENTRI?
Sentri provides drivers and pedestrians with quick access to the U.S. from both Canada and Mexico through dedicated Sentri lanes, and it also allows entry to TSA PreCheck lanes at airports across the U.S. and its territories.
Other significant Trusted Traveler Programs, such as Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and Nexus, are mainly available to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, although Canadian citizens and permanent residents can also use Nexus. In contrast, Sentri is accessible to all of these groups plus any foreign nationals.
"SENTRI was designed to streamline the passage of qualified, pre-approved, low-risk travelers through specified vehicle lanes at the Southwest Land Border," states the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "There are no citizenship or residency prerequisites to apply for SENTRI."
However, Sentri is particularly advantageous for individuals residing in or frequently traveling across border states, especially those along the northern boundary with Canada or the southern boundary with Mexico.

2. What is the application process for Sentri?
Those interested in applying for Sentri can do so online and will need to pay a fee of $122.50.
"Applicants are required to voluntarily participate in a comprehensive background check that includes evaluations against criminal, law enforcement, customs, immigration, and terrorism databases; a 10-fingerprint law enforcement check; and an interview with a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer," according to the DHS.
Upon approval of your application, you will need to arrange and attend an in-person meeting at one of the 13 locations situated in Arizona, California, and Texas.
At present, the earliest available appointments can be found in Laredo and Mission, Texas, so be aware that you might experience a wait for an appointment based on your chosen enrollment center's location.
Once your application is approved, a Sentri membership is valid for a period of five years.

3. Are there any additional steps in the application process?
To utilize a Sentri lane, every vehicle must be registered. Vehicles included in your original application to the program are registered at no additional cost; however, any further vehicle registrations incur a fee of $42 each.
You may register a maximum of four vehicles for access to the Sentri lanes, and each vehicle can have up to eight members registered.
"Approved SENTRI members can access Global Entry kiosks when returning to the United States via air travel and utilize TSA PreCheck, provided they fulfill the citizenship criteria for Global Entry and have their fingerprints and passports on record," according to the DHS.

4. Can I use Nexus to access Sentri lanes (and vice versa) when traveling back to the U.S. from Mexico?
According to the DHS, SENTRI members do not have "entitlements to any benefits under the NEXUS program via their SENTRI membership," however, Nexus members have the option to register their vehicle for access to Sentri lanes when entering the U.S. from Mexico.

5. Is there a way to speed up my Sentri application if I already have a Nexus card?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Your membership in one program does not influence the processing time of your application for another.
