As travel slowly recovers amid the ongoing pandemic, there’s hope for more international travel options, but unfortunately, American Airlines is facing challenges in expanding its global network for 2022 due to a shortage of planes.
Vasu Raja, American’s chief revenue officer, mentioned in an internal memo that Boeing's delays in delivering the 787s mean they will lack the necessary widebody aircraft to operate the planned international flights next summer, similar to their capacity in summer 2019.
Because of the delays with the Boeing 787, American has been forced to cut or delay multiple international routes in 2022.
The routes being cut in 2022 are as follows:
- Edinburgh, Scotland
- Shannon, Ireland
- Hong Kong
Moreover, American will not be resuming flights to several European destinations it operated in 2019, such as:
- Berlin, Germany
- Budapest, Hungary
- Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Reykjavík, Iceland
American will be making significant temporary cuts to services in various Asia-Pacific cities, including:
- Shanghai
- Beijing
- Sydney
The airline will delay the start of its new service from Seattle to Bangalore, India.
Raja mentioned that in 2022, American will allocate more resources to strengthen its domestic and short-haul international network, aiming to make it "even more extensive than what was available in 2019."
The airline expects to operate a full schedule to London, Dublin, and Madrid next year, and it plans to introduce new flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Doha, Qatar in the summer—indicating not all global routes are being cut.
However, these international route reductions come shortly after American cut a significant 27 routes from its domestic flight offerings, with 18 of those being from New York. United Airlines has also recently reduced its service, particularly to smaller domestic airports across the nation.
In light of last month’s flight reductions, American stated that this decision aimed to "better connect customers with the destinations that matter most to them."
Last month, American made cuts that affected its long-standing shuttle service between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and both Boston and Philadelphia, along with some flights to Costa Rica and Canada.
