Let’s be honest—this summer’s travel experience, marked by long airport queues and ongoing flight delays, hasn’t been the most appealing. However, as we move into fall, with its pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds, the international trips many of us postponed during the hectic first half of the year are starting to look much more attractive. Plus, fall is often a fantastic time to snag a great flight deal.

According to travel booking app Hopper, the average round-trip international airfare for September and October has fallen to $754, which is a 19 percent ($179) decrease from summer prices. Domestic round-trip fares this fall have also seen a drop of 37 percent, now averaging $238—$142 less than average summer round-trip flights.

This is the perfect moment to arrange your holiday travel if you haven't already. To secure the best prices, Hopper suggests booking at least three weeks in advance for domestic flights and four weeks for international trips—add extra weeks for popular holiday travel periods.

So, where are travelers headed this fall? A survey of 2,700 international users conducted by travel booking site Tripadvisor revealed the most popular fall travel destinations are:

Catch flights to Iceland starting at $136 with Play Airlines

The budget-friendly Icelandic airline Play Airlines, which launched in the U.S. in December 2021, is currently offering a sale on flights to Iceland for travel between September 2022 and March 2023. We discovered one-way fares for September and October starting at $136 from New York Stewart International Airport (about 90 minutes north of Manhattan) to Reykjavík–Keflavík Airport in Iceland. Round-trip flights to Delhi, India, starting at $859 on Etihad

The national airline of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways, has launched a fall travel sale that runs until September 16. Highlights include round-trip economy fares to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for $859, departing from Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. This deal also features flights to Delhi, India, from Washington, D.C., starting at $859 (and $879 from New York). Additionally, the airline has relaunched its Etihad Stopovers program, offering discounted and complimentary stays at select Abu Dhabi hotels for travelers before they continue their journey.

Travel to Canada for under $100

Air Canada is offering a promotion valid until September 14 for travel from September 21, 2022, through May 31, 2023. The deals are numerous, including one-way flights from Los Angeles to Vancouver starting at $94. One-way fares from New York to Montreal begin at $88 (with flights from Los Angeles to Montreal at $221). From Montreal, you can fly to Paris with round-trip tickets as low as $660.

One-way flights to Paris starting at $281 with French Bee

Alongside offering affordable direct flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Newark Liberty International Airport to Paris-Orly, French Bee will begin flights from Miami to Paris on December 15, with introductory one-way fares starting at $281. These Miami flights, which are now bookable, will operate three times a week on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, increasing to four times a week in April. French Bee partners with Alaska Airlines, enabling travelers to connect from various U.S. destinations on a single ticket, using modern Airbus A350s for their flights.

Round-trip fares to Lisbon starting at $389
