Immerse yourself in the coffee culture of Buon Ma Thuot, located in the Central Highlands © Sarah Nguyen / ShutterstockExploring waterfalls and coffee in the Central Highlands: Buon Ma Thuot
Christine Van, a veteran lifestyle editor and Viet-Kieu American, has made Vietnam her home for over twenty years.
For coffee enthusiasts, this is a true paradise. Buon Ma Thuot, nestled in the highlands of Central Vietnam, is renowned for its coffee culture. Here, you can partake in guided tours of vibrant coffee plantations, indulging in the fragrance of freshly roasted beans. You can even learn to brew your own cup of Vietnamese coffee. As the country’s largest coffee-producing region, Buon Ma Thuot takes immense pride in its main export, even hosting an annual coffee festival every mid-March.
However, the magic of Buon Ma Thuot goes well beyond its coffee scene. Enchanting waterfalls like Dray Nur and Dray Sap bring fairy tales to mind. While swimming is off-limits, the lush surroundings and the sound of rushing water create an awe-inspiring experience on land.
After exploring the waterfalls, I typically return to my uncle’s nearby home. If you don’t have local family, consider the Dakruco Hotel, which offers cozy rooms along with an outdoor pool and spa—perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.
To fully embrace the local culture, a trip to Lak Lake is essential. This tranquil haven is encircled by picturesque villages and home to the friendly M’Nong ethnic group, who live in colorful rattan and wooden stilt houses by the lakeshore. Numerous companies provide canoe tours, letting you engage with the M’Nong people and experience their traditions, such as folk songs and drumming.
Cap off your day with a delightful meal at Quan Nem Nuong Thanh Loan, where you can savor nem nuong dak lak, a signature dish of Buon Ma Thuot. This delicacy consists of seasoned ground pork blended with an assortment of herbs and spices, wrapped in fresh rice paper and grilled over hot coals for a deliciously smoky flavor.
Chau Doc’s markets are famous for their exceptional fish products © The South Wind / ShutterstockHolidays in the 'kingdom of fish sauce': Chau Doc
Phan Cac Truc, who grew up in Vietnam, now focuses on visual arts, writing, and storytelling.
Nestled near the Cambodian border, Chau Doc is a vibrant city in the Mekong Delta, home to diverse communities including Chinese, Cham, and Khmer. This rich cultural tapestry is reflected in its architecture and culinary offerings. Beyond Mekong Delta cruises, visitors can explore sacred sites like the Hang Pagoda and Ba Chuc Tomb, or enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife at the Tra Su Bird Sanctuary.
My main reason for visiting is the Chau Doc Floating Market, which offers exciting culinary experiences with a remarkable selection of fish sourced from the river. Be sure to try mam (fermented seafood) and the renowned variety of fish sauces crafted from different fish such as snakehead, catfish, and anchovy. The local soup, Bun mam, often called 'Vietnamese gumbo,' is a must-try. Another local favorite is lau mam (fish sauce hot pot), featuring a delightful mix of shrimp, fish, meat, and over 20 types of vegetables and herbs. During the new year, the market buzzes with energy as preparations for festivities create a lively atmosphere.
Another essential stop in the region is the floating Tra Su Cajuput Forest, a conservation area and one of Vietnam’s most stunning locations. The best time to experience this unique ecosystem is during and right after the monsoon season, from June to November, when the forest comes alive in vibrant green hues. I also suggest hiking the 4km (2.5-mile) trail up Sam Mountain for breathtaking views over the expansive rice fields leading to the border. Before your hike, don't miss the chance to grab some hot sponge cakes made with palmyra sugar, a local delicacy, readily available from village stalls or homes.
Traditional fishing practices thrive in the picturesque Lang Co © 500px Prime / Getty ImagesDiscover a treasure trove of natural beauty in southern Central Vietnam: Lang Co
Giang Pham, a writer specializing in lifestyle, food, and beverages, is based in Ho Chi Minh City.
Nestled away from Vietnam’s crowded tourist areas, Lang Co is a hidden gem celebrated for its rich heritage, warm hospitality, and diverse landscapes. Situated between the historic city of Hue and Danang in Central Vietnam, it's my go-to destination for untouched fishing villages, national parks, pristine beaches, and stunning turquoise bays.
During my stay, I choose Laguna Lang Co, a sprawling 280-hectare (692-acre) resort that offers breathtaking sea views and is nestled among lush forests and mountains. The resort staff organize various local tours, including a visit to the fishing village of Canh Duong. Here, residents continue to uphold traditional and sustainable fishing practices, such as sun-drying fish in natural salt to enhance both flavor and preservation. The hotel collaborates with local fishermen, allowing guests to join boat tours to discover how fishing supports this community.
Another essential stop is Bach Ma National Park, a true natural wonder boasting stunning views, towering waterfalls that reach nearly 300m (984ft), and an incredible variety of plant and animal life. With its peak soaring to 1450m (4750ft), the park provides breathtaking panoramas of Lang Co Bay. There are several guided trails to explore; most are moderate, and some lead to the historic ruins of French colonial villas and hotels.
For an exceptional dining experience featuring local cuisine and fresh seafood, including seaside-scented oysters, I highly recommend Lang Chai Lang Co Seafood Restaurant. Situated near the scenic Lap An Lagoon, this restaurant offers spectacular views of the bay.
The best time to visit the Lang Co area is from March to July, when sunny skies prevail with minimal rainfall. Note: it can become quite humid. From August to December, the rainy season sets in, transforming the landscape into a lush green paradise.
