First-Ever Luxury River Cruises to Launch on Colombia’s Magdalena River
The Magdalena River is essential to Colombia's identity. Flowing nearly 1,000 miles northward along the country's western side before reaching the Caribbean Sea, it has historically served as a vital transportation route. Today, it links various towns and cities through a biodiverse region, home to over 150 mammals, 1,900 bird species, and 300 reptiles, amphibians, and fish. In 2024, travelers will have the unique opportunity to explore this vibrant waterway aboard luxury river cruise ships for the first time.
The upscale river cruise line AmaWaterways has announced the construction of two new vessels designed specifically for the Magdalena River, with plans to commence sailing in 2024. This initiative marks the first major river cruise line to venture into this part of the world. The sister ships, AmaMagdelena (launching on March 30, 2024) and AmaMelodia (launching on June 19, 2024), will operate one of two seven-night itineraries deep into Colombia’s heartland.
The two itineraries, named “Wonders of Colombia” and “Magic of Colombia,” will travel between Cartagena and Barranquilla, with the primary distinction being the starting and ending ports of each journey. Both itineraries will feature highlights such as walking tours and jazz performances in historic cities like Mompox (a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its colonial architecture that blends Spanish and Indigenous styles); birdwatching along the riverbanks for approximately 2,000 bird species, many endemic to Colombia; and a visit to Palenque, recognized for its Mayan ruins and as the first “free city” in the Americas, founded by escaped slaves during colonial times.

Travelers can also opt for three nights pre-cruise in Medellin, Colombia, where they can immerse themselves in the vibrant coffee culture and street art scene, as well as three nights post-cruise in Panama City, Panama, featuring visits to the Panama Canal and Chagres National Park.
Each sister ship will host up to 60 guests. Staterooms will vary from 237 square feet—featuring a double bed, desk, seating area with two armchairs, and a patio—to 510-square-foot Grand Suites that come with an additional bathroom equipped with a soaking tub and a larger seating area. Both ships will offer a main restaurant, a smaller specialty dining venue, a pool, a fitness center, and a spa and salon providing hair, nail, and massage services.
Prices for both itineraries start at $3,599 per person, based on double occupancy.
