From galactic dining experiences to Lightning Lanes, discover 22 of the fresh new offerings at Disney World for its 50th anniversary celebration.
Walt Disney World Resort marks its 50th year this year, celebrating with an 18-month-long extravaganza. No Disney celebration is complete without fresh announcements and new adventures, and this anniversary is no different.
There’s so much in store at the parks over the coming 18 months and beyond. Here’s a comprehensive list of all the exciting new additions arriving at Disney World.
(Image courtesy of Madison Blancaflor/Dinogo)Cutting-edge technological innovations
For years, Disney has been a leader in using technology to craft immersive stories and deliver unforgettable experiences at its parks. To kick off its 50th anniversary celebration, Disney unveiled two exciting interactive features arriving at Walt Disney World in 2022 — 'Hey Disney!' and MagicBand+.
'Hey Disney!'
With 'Hey Disney!', Disney is bringing enhanced features to all of its Walt Disney World resorts. This service, integrated with Amazon Echo devices, helps guests plan their dream Disney vacation, from answering questions and setting alarms to giving weather updates and requesting extra pillows.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)Guests will also be able to engage with beloved Disney characters like Mickey, Olaf, C-3PO, and more through the service. Plus, a new character, the Disney Magical Companion, will serve as the voice behind Hey Disney!
The service will be free and optional, allowing guests who prefer not to use it to simply keep it muted during their stay. Families with compatible Amazon devices at home will also be able to purchase 'Hey Disney!' through the Amazon Alexa Skills store.
MagicBand+
MagicBands have been an iconic part of Disney World since 2013, and in 2022, the technology is getting an upgrade with the introduction of the next generation: MagicBand+.
The new MagicBand+ will feature vibrant color-changing lights, haptic feedback, and gesture recognition throughout the Walt Disney World parks. These bands will unlock exclusive experiences for guests across the parks.
For instance, you'll discover virtual bounties scattered throughout Black Spire Outpost (aka Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios), or engage with the "Disney Fab 50 Character Collection" statues displayed around the parks. Your MagicBand will even synchronize with the new nighttime spectaculars, lighting up in perfect harmony.
More details will be revealed in the coming months, and standard MagicBands will remain available for purchase (so you can continue using them throughout the parks and resorts).
Disney Genie
We've previously covered this new service, but it will officially launch later this fall as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)Disney Genie is a free service available through the My Disney Experience app, designed to help you plan your Disney World visit. Simply input your ride preferences (or even general interests if you're unsure about specific attractions), and the app will create a personalized itinerary to help you maximize your time in the parks.
For an additional cost, Genie+ will be available, offering Lightning Lane access to shorten wait times on select rides and other exciting benefits.
New nighttime spectaculars
In addition to the exciting new nighttime spectaculars, several fresh entertainment options will light up the parks, making your Disney World experience truly unforgettable — literally.
Disney Enchantment
Magic Kingdom is introducing a brand-new nighttime spectacular, 'Disney Enchantment.' This show will feature original music, enhanced lighting effects, and, of course, a spectacular display of Disney pyrotechnics. The show’s lighting effects will start at Cinderella Castle and stretch all the way down Main Street, U.S.A. — a first for any nighttime fireworks display at Disney World.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)If you love revisiting classic cartoons and stories, this show is a must-see. To fully appreciate the projection mapping and animation on Cinderella Castle, we recommend finding a spot nearby for the best view.
Though it’s bittersweet that Magic Kingdom's beloved and emotional 'Happily Ever After' show has come to an end, it’s still worth watching as Tinkerbell sprinkles pixie dust from above during 'Enchantment.'
Harmonious
Epcot is also introducing a new nighttime spectacular: 'Harmonious.' If you’ve visited Epcot in the last year, you’ve likely seen the massive barges in the World Showcase lagoon. This new show makes use of those barges with incredible special effects that blend music, LED screens, water projections, and fireworks to tell stories from across the globe.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)We had the chance to experience the full show in person when it first premiered, and the effects are truly breathtaking. The music is lively and uplifting, featuring artists from around the world who re-recorded classic Disney songs to celebrate different cultures.
The show's message is a reminder that we are more alike than we are different. While it may not have been my all-time favorite Epcot show (and it doesn't tug at the heartstrings like 'Happily Ever After'), 'Harmonious' is still definitely worth experiencing.
For the best viewing experience, we recommend watching from either the side of the circular barge. You can get this view from the entrance to World Showcase behind Spaceship Earth or from the area near the American pavilion in the World Showcase.
Beacons of Magic
The nighttime magic doesn’t stop with fireworks. During the 18-month 50th anniversary celebration, iconic landmarks across Walt Disney World will feature stunning 'EARidescent' lighting effects:
- Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom
- Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom
- Spaceship Earth at Epcot
- Hollywood Tower Hotel at Hollywood Studios
Spaceship Earth at Epcot has received a permanent update, featuring new reflective panels and lighting. These vibrant lighting effects will continue to shine well beyond the 50th-anniversary celebration.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)Electrical Water Pageant
The Electrical Water Pageant is a Disney tradition that has been lighting up Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake since 1971, and it’s receiving some exciting updates for the 50th anniversary.
A new towering castle and sparkling pixie dust will now glow in time with the celebration anthem, 'The Magic Is Calling.'
New Attractions
Remy's Ratatouille Adventure
Disney fans have eagerly awaited the debut of this ride at Epcot. On the attraction, you'll shrink down to the size of Remy and race through the bustling kitchen of Gusteau’s restaurant.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)If you've experienced Remy's Ratatouille Adventure at Disneyland Paris, you'll find this new Epcot attraction nearly identical. We had the chance to ride it during a media preview event—and we enjoyed it so much, we went on it twice!
The ride is charming and a great kid-friendly addition to World Showcase. You wear 3-D glasses and experience some delightful effects as the story unfolds.
However, it may not be the best choice for those prone to motion sickness. Surprisingly, the most enjoyable parts of the experience for us were the areas around the entrance and the queue itself. The atmosphere in the queue is fantastic and really immerses you in the story's world before the ride begins.
Epcot visitors have long requested more family-friendly attractions that both kids and adults can enjoy, and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure is exactly what they’ve been asking for.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attraction
Although it won’t debut on October 1, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is scheduled to open in 2022 as part of the ongoing 50th-anniversary celebrations, which will span 18 months.
The ride is still under construction, but we were given an exclusive sneak peek of what’s to come. Inside the ride building, the rollercoaster is massive. Guests will venture to Zandar and embark on a thrilling adventure full of unexpected twists and turns.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)Cosmic Rewind is poised to become the largest indoor rollercoaster in any Disney park, and based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s sure to be a hit when it opens next year. Keep an eye out for more details in the coming months.
New dining experiences
After exploring the park’s thrilling attractions, you’ll be able to satisfy your appetite with one of the exciting new dining options opening as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Space 220
Ever dreamt of dining in space? Epcot’s new restaurant will make that dream a reality — and it’s truly out of this world.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)Space 220 will transport you 220 miles above Earth to the Centauri Space Station.
(Image courtesy of Summer Hull/Dinogo)From the panoramic windows, you'll enjoy stunning views of Earth, and see space tourists, visiting ships, and a few other surprises floating past.
Disney has really focused on creating immersive experiences in recent years, and Space 220 is no exception. While the menu can be a bit expensive, the experience itself is definitely worth it. Plus, the food and cocktails are delicious.
We highly recommend the calamari as a starter, along with any of the delightful (though quite sweet) cocktails that feature fun touches like melting cotton candy or popping candy.
La Crêperie de Paris
If you prefer staying grounded, head over to Paris for a delicious crepe. The restaurant offers both table service and take-out, with a variety of savory galettes and sweet crepes to choose from.
We tried several options, and they were all amazing. For a savory treat, the Galette Classique with ham, egg, and Swiss cheese was our favorite. The Galette Saumon, featuring smoked salmon and cream cheese, makes a great brunch choice. For dessert, the Crêpe Melba (with peaches, red berries, and almonds) and Crêpe Gourmande (stuffed with hazelnut chocolate spread and whipped cream) are both fantastic options.
Steakhouse 71
As part of the renovations at Disney's Contemporary Resort, The Wave restaurant has been replaced with a brand-new steakhouse offering.
The name pays tribute to the year both Disney World and the Contemporary Resort first opened their doors to the public, with every dish on the menu having a unique story tied to Walt Disney himself.
For steak lovers, this is a fantastic choice for an elegant meal. The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the crab cake appetizer was a hit. The drink menu features specialty cocktails, and there’s a wide selection of desserts. The ambrosia dessert stood out as a surprising favorite — a creative twist on a classic that was unexpectedly delicious.
Be sure to ask your server about the history behind each dish. The stories behind the menu items added a personal and memorable touch to the experience.
50th-Anniversary Special Menu Items
As part of the 50th-anniversary celebration, special food items will be available at various parks and resorts, including:
- Cheese fries with Walt’s Chili - Animal Kingdom
- Filet Mignon with Walt’s Hash - Hollywood Studios
- Mission to Mars Burger - Magic Kingdom
- EARidescent Croissant Doughnut - Epcot
- EARidescent Ice Dream Cone - Blizzard Beach
- 50th Celebration Ganache Chocolate Bar - Disney Springs
- 50th Celebration Soufflé - Disney's Contemporary
- Magical Beacon Cocktail - Available at table-service restaurants, lounges, and pool bars across Disney World
Over 150 new menu items will debut across the resort, each celebrating Disney's legacy while offering guests exciting culinary experiences that push the boundaries of flavor.
In addition to the culinary creations, new novelty items like popcorn buckets, mugs, and sippers are also available for purchase, starting October 1.
New Entertainment
Along with fresh nighttime shows, there will also be new performances and entertainment experiences to enjoy during the anniversary celebration.
Disney KiteTails
Animal Kingdom has launched the new daytime spectacular, "Disney KiteTails." Three times a day, the Discovery River Theatre will be filled with colorful kites of all sizes. Some of the larger 3D kites will soar above the water, showcasing beloved characters from "The Lion King" and "The Jungle Book."
Drawn to Life
At Disney Springs, a magical collaboration between Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Walt Disney Imagineering has resulted in a heartwarming new family show: Drawn to Life.
The story follows Julie, "a young girl who uncovers a hidden treasure left by her Disney animator father: an unfinished animation that changes her life."
Tickets for the show can be purchased at cirquedusoleil.com/drawntolife. The premiere is scheduled for November 18.
The Magic Is Calling
If you find yourself in the parks, you'll likely hear a new song echoing throughout various spots in unique ways. Disney Platinum-selling songwriter and music producer Alana Da Fonseca, along with songwriter and producer Bobby Studley and award-winning composer Emily Bear, teamed up to create this special anthem for the 50th-anniversary celebration.
"The Magic Is Calling" serves as the official anthem for the celebration, and guests can enjoy it during live shows, cavalcades, and more.
New Epcot transformation
Epcot is undergoing its most significant transformation yet, evolving from its past incarnation into a true Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. The park now seamlessly merges nature, education, Disney characters, and attractions, creating an experience that goes beyond the feel of a school trip.
In addition to the new Space 220 restaurant, the Remy's Ratatouille Adventure ride, and a fresh nighttime spectacular, Epcot is also enhancing its atmosphere with new social spaces, the Club Cool experience by Coca-Cola, and redesigned areas like World Showcase, World Nature, World Celebration, and World Discovery.
(Photo by Summer Hull/Dinogo)Although Epcot's transformation isn't fully complete— with more construction underway and attractions like the Guardians of the Galaxy thrill ride and Moana's Journey of Water still to come— the park has already risen to the top of Disney's must-see destinations, offering an impressive array of new experiences.
New merchandise collections
(Photo by Madison Blancaflor/Dinogo)As with any Disney celebration, new merchandise is a must. During the 50th anniversary, Disney World is rolling out five exclusive merchandise lines to mark the occasion.
The Celebration Collection offers a range of family-friendly items featuring the shimmering iridescent colors seen in many of the anniversary decorations. Meanwhile, the Disney Castle Collection brings the magic of Cinderella Castle to life with apparel, collectibles, jewelry, and more. For a more pastel touch, the EARidescent Collection boasts pink hues with elegant sequins and intricate embroidery.
But the two collections we're most excited about are the Vault Collection, which offers a nostalgic look back with retro-themed designs, and the Luxe Logo Collection, which features high-end pieces in black and gold, including a stunning pair of black leather ears with gold accents that we can’t stop thinking about.
Some of these exclusive lines are already available across the parks, Disney Springs, and online, including the Celebration Collection, Disney Castle Collection, and EARidescent Collection.
Recently updated accommodations
Finally, Disney has been refreshing and expanding its hotel offerings to enhance the guest experience.
Disney's Contemporary Resort
A staple of Disney World since its opening in 1971, the iconic A-frame Contemporary Resort has been undergoing significant renovations. The hotel is now putting the finishing touches on its rooms in the main building as part of an exciting update.
(Photo by Summer Hull/Dinogo)The newly redesigned rooms, lobby, and other hotel areas feature a sleek yet playful post-modern style. We had the opportunity to stay at the resort as press guests, and the new "Incredibles"-themed rooms are truly a highlight.
Throughout the property, there are subtle references to the resort's legacy and to Disney World's rich history as a whole.
Disney's Polynesian Village Resort
Another original resort from opening day, the Polynesian Village Resort recently completed a major renovation that touches everything from the entrance to the guest rooms. The updated look now incorporates a Moana-inspired design that beautifully complements the resort's Polynesian Island theme.
The rooms now feature a refreshed color scheme inspired by the serene tones of the Pacific Ocean and its islands.
This renovation brought many upgrades, including replacing carpet with sleek hard floors, elevating the beds for additional luggage storage, and adding a wealth of power and USB outlets throughout the room. It's safe to say that one of Walt Disney World's finest resorts just got even better.
Disney's Grand Floridian
Disney's Grand Floridian is undoubtedly luxurious, but Disney has big plans to elevate it even further.
One of the five outer buildings currently used for guest rooms will soon be transformed into 200 Disney Vacation Club studios, each accommodating up to five guests. These will be available starting in the summer of 2022.
The redesigned rooms will blend the Grand Floridian's classic Victorian charm with modern touches, including quartz countertops, patterned tiles, and a soothing color scheme. When we inquired about the possibility of the main hotel rooms receiving a similar update, the response was very encouraging.
(Image courtesy of Disney)Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser
In addition to updating existing hotels, Disney World is introducing a fully immersive hotel experience for Star Wars enthusiasts. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will debut on March 1, 2022, with bookings opening on October 28.
A preview of what a cabin aboard the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort might look like. (Photo by David Roark/Disney)This experience is quite expensive (think a minimum of $6,000), but it promises to be a groundbreaking offering in the realm of immersive entertainment. Guests will have the chance to truly step into the Star Wars universe, making decisions that influence how they interact with the story as it unfolds.
