Hostels are transforming into vacation rentals to meet the demands of the pandemic

Before the pandemic, the HI Point Reyes Hostel — the only non-camping lodging option for travelers in the breathtaking Point Reyes National Seashore along California's Northern coast — served as a gathering spot for guests worldwide to plan their hikes over muesli in the shared kitchen and organize their gear on dormitory-style beds.
Currently, this coastal location is one of five hostels that have converted into temporary vacation rentals within Hostelling International USA's collection, which primarily features shared accommodations.
Now, rather than catering to independent international travelers, the HI Point Reyes Hostel accommodates multigenerational families, groups of friends, and others in its Historic Lodge and Bunkhouse, which can collectively sleep up to 32 guests for $1,000 per night when booked together.
If you're concerned about your vacation rental being snatched away, a common issue in today's competitive housing market, choosing a hostel for your next getaway might provide a more reliable option for planning your trip.
Aaron Chaffee, vice president and head of Hostel Network for HI USA, stated that Hostelling International USA's choice to transform several smaller hostels in California and Massachusetts into vacation rentals since the pandemic is a direct response to evolving needs.
Chaffee noted, "Given COVID-19 and shifting demand, it was challenging to find ways to effectively space guests in the common areas of some of the smaller hostels."
To address public health concerns and the rising demand for vacation rentals, the nonprofit opted for a creative approach, converting some of its smaller hostels with the most picturesque views into vacation rentals, according to him.
"We recognized the demand for such locations and felt confident it would succeed without needing to test it," he remarked. "Our intuition proved right, and it did work out."
In fact, many of the vacation rental hostels have enjoyed solid bookings throughout the summer season.
Chaffee mentioned that minor modifications have been implemented at some properties to enhance their vacation rental appeal—such as merging two kitchens into one and adding decorative elements to private bedrooms to create a more inviting atmosphere.
"While we've always offered some private rooms in our hostels, we’ve maintained the dormitory setups," Chaffee explained. "This arrangement suits families traveling with children well."
You also won’t need to bring your own sleeping bag liner when staying at these hostels.
Each hostel vacation rental is equipped with bedding, towels, and kitchen essentials; however, don’t anticipate the luxury of a five-star rental or hotel, Chaffee clarified.
"These are charming, scenic places, but guests should be prepared for plenty of bunk beds and basic amenities," he noted. "You won't find high-end shampoos, hair dryers, or 600-thread-count sheets here."
If stunning views and affordable rates matter more to you than luxurious linens—considering that some of these properties can cost less than $40 per person per night—book one of the hostel-to-vacation rental options listed below while availability lasts.
Eventually, Chaffee indicated, these properties will likely return to their original function.
"Our nonprofit is focused on promoting cultural understanding and shared spaces in hostels—breaking down cultural barriers to foster a more peaceful world," he explained. "Once we move past COVID-19, we will likely revert to traditional hostel accommodations, as that aligns more closely with our mission."
