How to Obtain an International Driver’s License
Are you planning an international road trip? Make sure to secure an international driver’s license (also known as an international driving permit, IDP) along with rental car insurance before you set off. This permit, recognized in about 150 countries when paired with a valid U.S. driver’s license, is a passport-sized document featuring your photo, name, and driving details translated into ten languages. Here’s how to acquire your international driving permit.
What should I be aware of before applying for an international driving permit (IDP)?
Authorized IDPs in the U.S. are only provided by the Automobile Association of America (AAA), and you don’t need to be a member to apply for one. Until recently, the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) also issued permits, but they have ceased this service.
Before applying, check the licensing requirements for the countries you plan to visit and any rental car companies you may use. Official U.S. embassy websites and travel.state.gov offer insights on specific destination requirements and safety advice. Be aware that some countries, like China and Ethiopia, do not recognize international driver’s licenses; they provide their own temporary driving permits for tourists. Additionally, countries like Brazil and Uruguay only accept a specific type of IDP called the InterAmerican Permit, which is issued by AAA and is advised for travel across Latin America.
To obtain an IDP, you need to be at least 18 years old, a resident of the U.S., and hold a valid U.S. state or territory driver’s license that remains valid for at least six months after your trip begins. Note that U.S. citizens living abroad as expats cannot utilize IDPs in their current countries of residence.
These permits cannot be renewed and are typically valid for up to one year. In some locations, like Malaysia, IDPs are only valid for a few months, after which drivers must obtain a local driver’s license.
What is the process for applying for an IDP?
You can apply for your international driving permit either by visiting your local AAA office or by submitting your application via mail.
Steps for applying in person
Applying for your international driving permit in person at the nearest AAA office is quick and straightforward. Be sure to call ahead to see if you need an appointment. Bring two passport photos (or you can have them taken at the office for an extra fee), your valid driver’s license, a completed application, and the $20 fee, then you’ll walk out with your IDP. AAA allows you to set the start date for your permit up to six months in advance, so remember to note that on your application.
How to apply via mail
You can also submit your application by mail through AAA. The cost remains $20, and your permit will be sent to you via standard shipping at no extra charge. Include the fee, two passport-style photos, the application form, and a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license. Mail it to your local AAA office.
How to apply while overseas
AAA accepts applications sent from abroad (though not via fax or email), which is great news for those traveling long-term. The fee is the same, but the processing time will be longer than if you were applying in the U.S. AAA estimates a turnaround of four to six weeks with standard shipping. If you choose expedited shipping for an extra $75 to $100, you can expect your permit within 10 to 15 days. Send international applications to AAA at the following address:
AAA/IDP
1000 AAA Drive
Heathrow, FL 32746
Attn: Mail Stop #28
Is an IDP really necessary?
In countries where these permits are mandatory (like Japan), nonresident drivers caught without one may face hefty fines, legal repercussions, and in severe cases, deportation or imprisonment. Even in places where an IDP isn’t strictly required, having this document with your photo, name, and driving details in several languages can significantly ease communication. For just $20, it’s a wise investment to ensure you're covered.
Do international visitors need an IDP to drive in the United States?
Visitors to the United States must possess a valid driver’s license from their home country if they plan to drive during their visit. It’s also advisable to acquire an international driving permit from the relevant authority in their home country. While federal law does not mandate IDPs for visiting drivers, some states and rental car companies do require them.
