How to obtain Nexus for expedited entry into the US and Canada
Note from the Editor: This post is updated regularly with the latest information and deals.
Trusted Traveler Programs assist qualified travelers in speeding through security at U.S. airports and border crossings.
A lesser-known option, Nexus, is available for those who frequently travel between the U.S. and Canada. What's even more surprising is that Nexus also provides a Global Entry (and therefore a TSA PreCheck) membership for an extra $50.
Considering whether Nexus is the right choice for you? Here’s all the information you need.

Understanding how Nexus functions
GREGORY REC/PORTLAND PRESS HERALD/GETTY IMAGESU.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Canadian citizens, lawful permanent residents of Canada, and Mexican nationals who are part of Mexico's equivalent program (Viajero Confiable) qualify for Nexus. Participants under 18 require consent from a parent or legal guardian.
Nexus offers expedited processing for pre-screened travelers entering the U.S. and Canada by air, land, or sea. It features Nexus-exclusive processing lanes at specific northern border entry points, Nexus kiosks for air entry into Canada, and Global Entry kiosks at nine Canadian Preclearance airports across Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. While Global Entry cards grant Nexus access into the U.S., they are not valid for entry into Canada through Nexus lanes or kiosks.
The Nexus application procedure
Travelers can apply for a Nexus membership online, after which they will need to schedule an in-person interview at an enrollment center.
There are currently 15 enrollment centers located in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Vermont, Washington, and Canada.
As of 2023, the typical processing time for Nexus applications is 18 to 20 months, so it’s wise to plan ahead.
Similar to other Trusted Traveler Programs, a Nexus membership is valid for five years. Adult applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable application fee of $50.
The Canada Border Services Agency along with U.S. Customs and Border Protection recommend that Nexus holders submit their renewal applications a year prior to the expiration date.
Nexus membership card
Once approved, Nexus members will receive their membership identification card by mail, which they can use to enter Canada or the U.S. at specified Nexus entry points.
To activate your Nexus membership card, simply log into your Trusted Traveler Program account and select the "Activate Membership Card" option in the "Program Membership(s)" section.
After activating your membership, always carry your card (along with your passport and/or proof of permanent residency) when traveling. The CBP recommends this to ensure you can demonstrate your citizenship or permanent residency status if required.
If you misplace your Nexus card, a fee of $25 will be charged for its replacement.
Enrollment on Arrival program
SEAN CUDAHY/DinogoSimilar to Global Entry, conditionally approved Nexus applicants can finalize the interview requirement through Enrollment on Arrival when returning to the U.S. by air, including from specific CBP preclearance sites.
This procedure allows conditionally approved applicants to conduct their Global Entry and/or Nexus enrollment interview as part of the immigration process upon arriving at the airport after an international flight. To participate, look for signs directing you to the "Enrollment on Arrival" lanes and ensure your flight lands during the interview availability hours.
A CBP officer will conduct your Global Entry interview during the admissibility review process.
Since Nexus is a collaboratively managed Trusted Traveler Program, applicants must interview with both CBP and the CBSA for their approval.
This involves a two-step procedure. Initially, applicants must meet with the CBSA at enrollment centers located in Canadian airports to finish the Canadian part of the interview process. Following that, they will have to interview with CBP at designated Enrollment on Arrival sites.
All conditionally approved applicants can complete their CBP interview through Enrollment on Arrival at any participating U.S. airport or preclearance site, even if they haven't finished the CBSA segment of the interview.
Enrollment on Arrival interviews are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the availability of airport personnel qualified to assist.
Nexus encompasses both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.
ZACH GRIFF/DinogoAs previously mentioned, a Nexus membership provides access to Global Entry, which also includes TSA PreCheck security lanes. TSA PreCheck is an expedited security program managed by the Transportation Security Administration for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. Those enrolled in TSA PreCheck can use dedicated security lines at over 200 U.S. airports without the need to remove their shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, and light jackets.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, by fulfilling Nexus eligibility criteria and sharing your passport details and fingerprints during your enrollment interview, you can qualify for Global Entry. However, this is particularly advantageous for Americans residing near the Canadian border, as only border locations accept interview applicants.
The same guidelines apply to all TSA PreCheck users, whether they hold Nexus or not.
After enrolling, you'll need to add your Known Traveler Number to your airline booking. When you check your boarding pass, you should see a TSA PreCheck indicator. The only way to access the TSA PreCheck lane is by presenting your boarding pass that displays this symbol.
Credit cards that reimburse Nexus application fees
Various credit cards provide cardholders with up to $100 in statement credit reimbursement for the application fees related to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry (and therefore, Nexus), including:

- United℠ Explorer Card (every four years)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® (every four years)

The cost of Global Entry will rise to $120 in October, so make sure to verify if your credit card issuer plans to adjust its statement credit accordingly.
In summary
Qualified travelers can benefit from Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and Nexus at half the cost of a Global Entry membership. If you are a U.S., Mexican, or Canadian citizen who often travels across the U.S.-Canada border, this program may be ideal for you.
