How to Organize the Ideal Getaway to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
When you ask any local from Charleston about their favorite nearby beach, they’ll likely rave about Sullivan’s Island. Having lived in the Holy City myself, I can confirm that this charming spot is one of the Lowcountry's top destinations for a healthy dose of relaxation, tranquility, and genuine Southern hospitality.
“With centuries of American history (Fort Moultrie National Historical Park is at one end of the island), stunning public beaches, and some of the best dining options just a short stroll from the shoreline,” says Elizabeth Rhodes, special projects editor at Dinogo and a native of South Carolina. This exceptional lineup of eateries features newcomers like The Longboard and Sullivan's Fish Camp, which opened in 2021 and 2022, respectively, alongside beloved spots like High Thyme, Home Team BBQ, and Poe’s Tavern.
Despite its impressive culinary scene, it becomes even more remarkable when you consider the island's size. 'Sullivan’s Island is just 2.5 miles long, making it much smaller than many imagine,' explains Ben Towill, co-founder of Basic Projects, a Charleston-based hospitality and design firm he runs with his wife, Kate. Although it's compact, its stunning views, family-friendly vibe, and distinctive local shops offer a delightful beach town experience that every visitor to Charleston should include on their itinerary.

Sullivan's Island Beach Oasis

Spacious Home with Porch, Balcony, and Sun Deck
You can't get more quintessentially Sullivan’s Island than this stunning beach house. Top Activities to Experience
Soak up the sun, sand, and waves on Sullivan’s Island.
Beach outings are a must on Sullivan’s Island, even when temperatures dip below 70 degrees. According to Rhodes, the beaches become 'perfectly secluded during the off-season,' allowing you to cozy up with a picnic basket, blanket, and a good book while enjoying the sunset. Public access points to the beach can be found all along the southern side of the island.
Rent bikes to explore the island.
Kate Towill recommends Sealand Adventure Sports for bike rentals, suggesting a route that begins with a quick ride through town, followed by a delightful journey through the neighborhoods. Then, head to Breach Inlet towards Isle of Palms, looping back to Sullivan’s to relax on the patio of Sullivan’s Fish Camp.
Capture a picture of Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse.
While you can’t enter Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, also known as “Charleston Light,” it offers an excellent photo opportunity. Its striking black and white stripes and location near Station 18 (a public beach access point) make it hard to miss.

A blend of history and stunning views, Fort Moultrie National Historical Park is essential for those seeking an educational experience. With origins dating back to the 1700s, the fort has been restored to showcase various eras from 1809 to 1947. “We enjoy walking around the park’s perimeter, adorned with vibrant wildflowers, before circling back to the ocean for a view of Fort Sumter,” shares Kate Towill.
Try a frosé at The Co-op.
During the peak of summer heat, nothing cools you down quite like a refreshing drink, and on Sullivan’s Island, that’s found at The Co-Op. “The Co-Op is essential for grabbing a frosé,” says Rhodes, referring to the cafe's famous frozen cocktail. Pro tip: Pair it with one of their gourmet breakfast or lunch sandwiches for the ultimate treat.
Top Dining Spots
Home Team BBQ
“Home Team is an excellent laid-back venue, ideal for families or big groups of friends. Whether you’re coming off the beach after a sunny day or heading out to the island for an early dinner, you can't miss their famous Gamechangers,” Ben advises. Just a heads up: these drinks pack a punch, so enjoy them wisely!
Poe’s Tavern
“Poe's Tavern — named after poet Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed on Sullivan's Island during his military service — offers mouthwatering burgers and perfectly crispy hand-cut fries,” says Rhodes. When the weather is nice, snag a table outside or on the porch to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Middle Street.
The Obstinate Daughter
For those seeking “a more sophisticated dining experience on the island,” Rhodes recommends The Obstinate Daughter. This Southern restaurant infuses Italian, Spanish, and French flavors into its dishes, featuring delights like grilled octopus, peel-and-eat shrimp, ricotta gnocchi, and homemade pizzas. Given its popularity, securing a reservation is strongly advised.
Sullivan’s Fish Camp
Sullivan’s Fish Camp has been a staple on the island since 1988, but it recently reopened to the public in 2022. As the sibling venue to Charleston’s Basic Kitchen and Post House Inn in Mount Pleasant — both owned by the Towills’ company, Basic Projects — it offers a unique narrative and distinct menu. Standout dishes include jalapeño and gouda hushpuppies, the Fish Camp Sandwich, and a refreshing frozen piña colada. Kate Towill also suggests trying the New England lobster roll.
High Thyme
Ben Towill describes High Thyme as a “charming local eatery with a relaxed vibe and tasty American cuisine.” Expect dishes like shrimp and grits, seared scallops, and pan-fried crab and shrimp cakes, complemented by a variety of beers, wines, and specialty cocktails. Keep in mind that High Thyme operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not accept reservations.

Stepping into Goldbug makes it nearly impossible to leave empty-handed, especially if you're in the market for something dazzling. Owner and designer Ashley Reid Martin offers a delightful array of locally crafted jewelry, along with swimwear, resort attire, beauty products, greeting cards, and candles, among other treasures.
Sealand Adventure Sports

Summer is undoubtedly the most popular season on Sullivan’s Island, so planning your trip wisely is key. “Sullivan's Island can get quite crowded on weekends as the temperatures rise. I suggest visiting during weekdays to sidestep the influx of locals that flock here on weekends,” advises Rhodes. If you’d like to bypass the peak season and enjoy easier parking, consider the fall. “Late fall is stunning on Sullivan’s. The mornings are cool, and the beach comes alive with locals walking their dogs,” notes Ben Towill. “In late October, you can also witness monarch butterflies migrating to the coast, which is a remarkable sight.” Another autumn highlight? The blooming pink muhly grass, perfect for photos.
Directions to Get There
“Sullivan’s Island is the nearest beach to downtown Charleston, taking roughly 15 to 20 minutes to reach,” states Kate Towill. This easy access makes it a fantastic day trip from the peninsula; just remember to leave early for a better shot at finding parking. If you’re coming directly from Charleston International Airport (CHS), it will only take about 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
