I Explored Some of Malaysia’s Most Breathtaking Waterfalls — Here’s How You Can Experience Them, Too
The lush forests surrounding Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, seem overlooked, and in many ways, they are. One early morning last June, I hiked through Templer Park with Kovin Siva, founder of Mowgli Venture, an adventure travel company. “We have stunning waterfalls, but they’re rarely visited because the trails have become overgrown,” Siva explained.
Malaysia is among the most biodiverse countries in the world, yet protecting its natural sites hasn’t been prioritized, resulting in many hiking paths falling into disrepair. Siva, who arranges day trips and overnight adventures across Malaysia and Indonesia, believes tourism can play a crucial role: “Engaging the public helps us safeguard our forests.”
For those seeking adventure close to Kuala Lumpur, there are several trails to explore, including the renowned waterfalls a few hours away, like the stunning Lata Iskandar in the lush Cameron Highlands.

This 6.6-mile trek starts near a village inhabited by the Orang Asli, Malaysia’s Indigenous people (with ‘Orang Asli’ translating to ‘first people’ in Malay). Cross the Pertak River via a suspension bridge, then trace the banks of the Sungai Luit as you journey towards the tiered Upper Medang Falls.
Templer Park
This forest reserve offers abundant opportunities for wildlife observation. Early risers can enjoy the calls of gibbons and hornbills; with some luck, you may even come across the tracks of a black leopard. The shortest hike, taking under an hour, leads to the pools at the base of the falls, while a longer and more challenging trail ascends to the summit, providing a view over the jungle.
Ulu Yam
This 2.7-mile path passes by four waterfalls, offering numerous spots for a refreshing swim, and is located near the renowned Batu Caves, a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus.
