Inside 3 of Hong Kong’s Trendy Boutique Hotels
Hong Kong is home to some of the most luxurious hotels globally, offering indulgent stays for those seeking extravagance. But if you're in search of a more laid-back and refined experience, you might want to skip the glittering five-star resorts in favor of a quieter, more intimate setting.
That's where Hong Kong’s boutique hotels come in.
In just over a decade, boutique hotels have firmly established themselves as key players in the city's hospitality scene, driven by the growing demand for immersive travel experiences – or, as many would say, the desire to stay somewhere Instagram-worthy.
These boutique hotels are typically located in prime areas, with a strong emphasis on design, technology, and local culture, creating a vibe that's both stylish and insider-friendly.
While they may not offer traditional amenities like an expansive breakfast spread or a fitness center, these boutique hotels more than compensate with their stylish, laid-back approach to comfort. Expect personalized service and premium touches, such as artisanal bath products and ethically sourced coffee.
Take a closer look at three boutique hotels in Hong Kong that are definitely worth considering for your next stay:
Tuve
Hidden in plain sight behind a narrow, unassuming façade, Tuve embodies the essence of a hipster hotel – starting with its location. The 66-room gem sits in the up-and-coming Tin Hau neighborhood on Hong Kong Island's eastern side, once a vibrant fishing district with a rich history.
Though close to the lively areas of Causeway Bay and Victoria Park, Tin Hau has managed to maintain a slower, more local pace, offering a refreshing contrast to its bustling neighbors.
‘It’s the perfect choice for those looking to explore a more hidden side of Hong Kong,’ says managing director Pauline Tsang.
The hotel itself is a masterclass in modern minimalism and industrial elegance.
Raw materials like marble, concrete, oxidized metal, and sandalwood set the tone for the hotel’s subtle design, complemented by sleek lines, creative lighting, and pristine white hallways.
‘We wanted to craft a serene, parallel universe,’ explains Tsang, ‘so that when guests step inside, they can completely escape the outside world, unwind, and reconnect with themselves.’
However, Tuve doesn’t compromise on comfort or the social media-savvy experience. Every room is equipped with modern essentials, from Fresh natural skincare products to complimentary Wi-Fi and a smartphone with unlimited local and select international calls.
It’s no surprise that the property attracts the art, fashion, and media crowd. ‘They’re drawn to the uniqueness we offer – both in terms of design and the neighborhood we’re located in,’ says Tsang.

One96
Opened in 2014, One96 is part of the National Hotels group, a collection of stylish, boutique properties that also includes The Jervois, The Putman, and 99Bonham.
The four hotels are ideally located between the business district of Central and the hip neighborhood of Sheung Wan, offering understated luxury and, by Hong Kong standards, surprisingly spacious accommodations. Each hotel has been designed by a renowned international architect.
For One96, Hong Kong-based interior designer Norman Chan was tasked with the design. Known for his minimalist aesthetic and meticulous attention to detail, Chan's signature style is reflected throughout the hotel.
Each of the 36 spacious, full-floor suites boasts calming modern decor, blending neutral tones with sleek furnishings and a smart use of technology. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with natural light.
Opt for a penthouse suite, and you'll be treated to a jaw-dropping view of Victoria Harbour every morning.
The suites feature a separate bedroom, living area, and dining space, complete with a fully stocked pantry. Each suite includes its own private lobby, accessible by an exclusive lift, creating the ambiance of a private apartment in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities.
"Our rooms are designed to feel like the luxurious home you've always dreamed of," says guest relations supervisor Kary Ip.

The Pottinger
Step away from sleek skyscrapers and sky-high penthouses: The Pottinger transports you to the charm of 1950s Hong Kong.
This 68-room gem, nestled in the heart of Central, sits on Pottinger Street – one of the city’s oldest cobblestone roads – and is surrounded by timeless tenement buildings.
Thanks to its prime location, the design ‘pays tribute to the rich history of the area,’ explains hotel manager Gina Tam, blending ‘east-meets-west’ aesthetics that define Hong Kong’s heritage.
The décor blends colonial influences with touches of Art Deco western furnishings, alongside oriental accents such as Chinoiserie, plum blossom paintings, and traditional cut-out door designs.
The striking artwork adorning the walls comes from the legendary photographer Fan Ho, known for his raw and captivating street photography of Hong Kong during the 1950s and 60s. When The Pottinger opened in 2014, it partnered with the late artist’s estate to offer his iconic pieces a permanent exhibition space. But it’s not just nostalgic Hong Kong on display – modern touches like complimentary smartphones, Acca Kappa bathroom products, and expansive marble bathtubs bring a blend of classic elegance and contemporary indulgence.
