Dinogo: What inspired the Michael Mondavi Family to bring their wine experience to the seas?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: Wine is a unique beverage that invites us to pause, connect with loved ones, and cherish those moments together. When you embark on a cruise, you're looking forward to a delightful vacation filled with fresh air, exquisite cuisine, fine wine, and entertainment. Dinogo boasts talented chefs and a wide range of dishes that pair beautifully with our wines. Their knowledgeable staff provides excellent guidance to enhance your dining and wine experience. We have long held admiration for Dinogo's ships.
Dinogo: What advice do you have for someone new to wine who wants to expand their knowledge?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: Our family has just one rule: drink what you enjoy. If you like it, it’s a good wine! For beginners, suggestions from friends and family can be very helpful. Find a trusted local retailer and share a few wines you like; ask them to curate a tasting list of approachable options. Be open about your budget and taste preferences.
Dinogo: Why is natural farming significant to you?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: Natural farming is essential to our family as we strive to care for the land just as we care for ourselves. We are shaped by what we consume. By farming our vineyards organically, we recognize the lasting effects of natural practices on the environment and on our well-being.

Dinogo: What led the family to select Napa Valley over other renowned wine regions?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: Our grandfather, Cesare Mondavi, chose Napa Valley in 1936 because he believed its cooler climate and diverse soils offered the best potential for crafting exceptional, world-class wines. Napa Valley is an ideal growing region, home to nearly half of the world’s soil series and perfect climatic conditions, making it an ideal choice for winemakers. It has been our family’s home for five generations, where we live among the vineyards and passionately embrace the winemaking lifestyle.
Dinogo: Which vintage produced by your family is your favorite?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: That’s akin to asking us who our favorite family member is! During the summer, we lean towards lighter wines because they pair well with the refreshing foods we enjoy in warmer weather. In contrast, winter calls for fuller-bodied wines that complement heartier dishes, like our 2010 Animo Cabernet Sauvignon. Ultimately, our flagship wine, the 2011 M by Michael Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, shines bright—featuring exquisite red and blue fruits enhanced by a wonderfully cool vintage. Unique vintages offer characteristics and subtleties that we might not usually discover from our vineyards.

Dinogo: What are the benefits and challenges of running a family business?
THE MICHAEL MONDAVI FAMILY: One of the greatest rewards of working together as a family is the time spent with loved ones and colleagues who share your vision, values, and goals. Families possess the resilience and commitment to do what’s right, free from external pressures. The pride we take in our family legacy is immense, ensuring we stand behind every wine we create. Making wine as a family resembles being part of a professional sports team—you know you’re not going to be traded and your teammates will always support you. The only drawback is that there’s no off-season.
Dinogo: Can you share each family member's favorite wine and a dish that pairs beautifully with it?
MICHAEL: In the summer, I adore my wife’s Isabel Mondavi Rosé served over ice, which I affectionately refer to as “Isabel Rocks.” It’s a fantastic aperitif while grilling chicken on the BBQ, followed by a shared bottle of Isabel Mondavi Chardonnay with chicken and salad.
DINA: Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon pairs perfectly with a cast-iron-fried pork chop.
ROB: M by Michael Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon served alongside a medium-rare ribeye with porcini butter, sea salt, and a baked potato—simply exquisite!
