Ask any photographer for their secret to the perfect shot, and they’ll probably mention things like timing, lighting, composition, and a bit of luck. But South African wildlife photographer Skye Meaker has a unique perspective.
“For me, the ideal shot is one where I can blend into the scene. It’s a moment when the animal feels so at ease that it behaves as though I’m invisible,” Meaker explains. “I love capturing nature in its purest, most natural form.”
After years of patiently capturing photos, Meaker finally achieved his vision of the perfect shot at just 17 years old. It features a leopard he calls 'Limpy,' a creature he has followed for years and holds dear. “I’ve grown with her,” he reflects.
This iconic image, ‘Lounging Leopard,’ earned Meaker the prestigious title of 2018 Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, awarded by the Natural History Museum in London.
Now 19, Meaker’s journey into wildlife photography began at the age of seven, during family trips to local game reserves and nature parks. “I was always mesmerized by my dad’s camera, how it could transform what I saw into a picture on a small screen. I was constantly asking him if I could take pictures too,” he recalls. “Eventually, my parents gave me a small camera, which I lovingly called my ‘pocket rocket.’”

After ten years of honing his craft, Meaker finally captured his award-winning image. Winning the title, he says, has had a profound impact on his life in many ways.
“I’ve had the opportunity to share my journey at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as well as in my home country of South Africa. It’s allowed me to share my love for wildlife photography with the world,” Meaker reflects.
“I envision a future where I can bring my own family to the wilderness, offering them the same chance to fall in love with nature that my parents gave me,” he shares. “I want to give my children the opportunity to experience and appreciate the beautiful world of nature that I hold dear.”
