Is TSA PreCheck Really Worth It?
Travel often involves a lot of stress, and getting through long lines can be the biggest hassle. TSA PreCheck aims to make your journey smoother by speeding up the security process.
Since its launch in 2013, TSA PreCheck now serves over 15 million members at 200+ airports across the U.S., with 87 airlines participating. According to recent TSA data, 92% of members experience security wait times under five minutes. If you haven't joined yet, here's what to expect from the program.
What is TSA PreCheck, and how does it work?
TSA PreCheck is a program that offers travelers a faster security screening experience for both domestic and select international flights. At airports that offer PreCheck, you'll find dedicated security lanes that are quicker and easier. You can leave on your shoes, belts, and light jackets, and won't need to take out your laptops or liquids.
Steps to Apply for TSA PreCheck
You can easily apply for TSA PreCheck online in about five minutes, followed by an in-person appointment at an enrollment center, which can be found at airports, Staples, and various IdentoGo locations. The appointment, which includes fingerprinting for a background check, takes around 10 minutes. Once approved, you'll receive a Known Traveler Number. Alternatively, you can get TSA PreCheck through Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI programs, which include PreCheck benefits.
Children under 12 can use TSA PreCheck with a parent or guardian, while those 13 and older need their own Known Traveler Number or must use the regular security line.
What does TSA PreCheck cost?
The initial TSA PreCheck application fee has recently been reduced to $78 for five years, and renewing costs $70.
How to Get TSA PreCheck Without Paying
One of the easiest ways to get TSA PreCheck for free is by using certain travel credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Platinum Card from American Express. These cards will reimburse you when you pay for the TSA PreCheck fee with them.
How long does TSA PreCheck approval take?
After your in-person appointment, most approvals come within three to five days, though some can take up to 60 days. This timeline also applies to renewals. You can track your application's progress via email, phone, text, or online.
How to Link TSA PreCheck to Your Boarding Pass
To use the TSA PreCheck lane, you'll need to show your boarding pass, either on paper or your phone, with the PreCheck logo indicating you're preapproved.
"Make sure to add your Known Traveler Number to your frequent flyer profile or your itinerary," advises Daniel Gillaspia, creator of the travel blog UponArriving.com. "Sometimes it can disappear from your booking, so you'll need to re-enter it, which you can do at check-in."
If your boarding pass lacks the TSA PreCheck logo, but you're flying with an eligible airline, visit the counter to have your Known Traveler Number re-added, or update it via the airline’s app.
Ensure that the information you provide TSA, including your full name, matches your ticket and loyalty program details exactly, or your PreCheck may not be applied.
Even with approval, there are instances when you may not be able to use the PreCheck lane.
Since not all airlines participate in TSA PreCheck, booking with a non-participating carrier (especially international ones) means you'll still need to go through regular security. This is why some frequent travelers also invest in a Clear membership. On the flip side, as Stephanie Miller, founder of the Scenic Suitcase blog, points out, when security lines get too long, non-PreCheck passengers may be moved into the TSA PreCheck lane, which can cause longer wait times for PreCheck members, especially when those moved aren't as familiar with security procedures.
Keep in mind that TSA PreCheck isn't available at all airports or even all terminals. The PreCheck lanes have their own operating hours and may not always be open, especially early in the morning. However, showing your TSA PreCheck approval might allow you to skip some steps, like leaving your electronics, liquids, and shoes in your bag.
Is TSA PreCheck a good investment?
For frequent travelers, TSA PreCheck is a great time-saver, and many can get it for free through certain credit cards. Even without the credit card perk, the cost is only about $14 to $16 per year, which is worth it for the convenience and reduced stress at the airport. The enrollment process is easier now too, with many nearby centers for in-person appointments. You'll truly appreciate TSA PreCheck when you see the long security lines or after you've almost missed—or actually missed—your flight because of them.
In addition to shorter wait times, TSA PreCheck spares you the hassle of removing shoes, belts, jackets, and taking out laptops and liquids when going through security, offering a smoother and less stressful travel experience.
