Jessica Nabongo Has Visited Every Nation, But Some Truly Shine Brightly
Revenge travel is a thing of the past (if it was ever truly a trend). This year, we’re embracing reconnection travel, which has emerged as the leading motivation for journeys in the post-pandemic world. After a challenging few years, people are venturing out into the world again with genuine enthusiasm and intention. Therefore, we spoke with 11 adventurous celebrities to discover what 'reconnection' signifies for them, whether it’s exploring solo, indulging in culinary delights in Italy, reuniting with old friends, honoring loved ones who have passed, or making that crucial visit to mom.
Jessica Nabongo is the first Black woman to explore every country, but as she shares below, there are a few destinations that resonate deeply with her—and one where she plans to celebrate a meaningful anniversary this year.
Which destination is calling you back?
I just returned from Cuba yesterday, marking my first visit since 2018. There’s an undeniable allure for me there. It’s the charm of the people and the beauty of the landscape. Japan is also beckoning me. I lived there for a year—from 2008 to 2009—so I’m eager to return and experience it as a brand new person. Fourteen years? Wow! I can hardly fathom—what will that be like? I’m extremely curious about that journey.
Which places feel like home, even if they’re not your birthplace?
Lately, I’ve felt a strong energetic connection to certain locations—Bahia in Brazil; Havana, Cuba; Dakar, Senegal. These are spots where I instantly feel comfortable. The people there make me feel at home. For me, home is defined by the people around me.
Are you planning any trips to reconnect? If so, what’s your plan?
The twentieth anniversary of my father’s passing is on May 17th, so my mom and I are organizing a trip to Uganda, and I’ll be taking some friends along. Uganda was the last country I visited before the lockdown; I departed at the end of February 2020. It will undoubtedly be an emotional journey, but I’m thrilled to be there with my mom, reconnecting with family, and introducing Uganda to my friends. There’s so much to look forward to!
