Kenya Adopts Visa-Free Travel, Launches New Electronic Entry System for Visitors

In December 2023, Kenya made a historic announcement, becoming the first African nation to allow visa-free access for all travelers. President William Ruto declared at a December 12 event, commemorating Kenya’s independence, that there will no longer be a need for anyone worldwide to endure the visa application process to enter Kenya.
However, visa-free travel doesn’t mean you can skip documentation. Instead of the previous $50 single-entry visa, international travelers must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Here’s what you need to know.
Steps to Apply for an ETA to Visit Kenya
Starting January 2024, all international travelers must secure an ETA before heading to Kenya. The ETA operates through a semi-automated online system that assesses visitors' eligibility for entry. The application fee is $34 per visitor, which applies to infants and children as well.
Travelers are advised to submit their ETA applications at least three days and up to three months before departure. This authorization is valid for one entry and is linked to the specific flights and dates mentioned in the application, allowing for a stay of up to 90 days.
The official ETA website of Kenya outlines the requirements for all visitors:
- A valid passport with a minimum of six (6) months validity remaining after your intended arrival date in Kenya, including at least one blank page.
- A selfie or passport photo uploaded through the website.
- Your contact details, such as email address and phone number.
- Information regarding your arrival and departure itinerary.
- Confirmation of your accommodation bookings.
- A credit card, debit card, or other payment methods.
Additionally, travelers visiting for personal reasons must provide the passport number (or another identity card number) of their hosts. Those traveling for business need to present an invitation letter from the company they will be visiting.
Visitors are required to apply through the official ETA website. After submitting your application, you will receive an email confirming the receipt of both the application and payment. Within three business days, you will receive another email indicating whether your application has been approved or denied by the immigration department.
If approved, print or take a screenshot of the PDF included in the confirmation email. This document must be presented at all entry and exit points in Kenya.
Reasons for Kenya's New ETA System
‘The decision to relax visa requirements and implement the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a significant opportunity to boost visitor numbers to Kenya,’ said John Chirchir, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Tourism Board, in an email to Dinogo. 'We warmly welcome our visitors with the phrase Karibu Nyumbani, meaning ‘welcome home.’”
The primary advantage of the ETA for the Kenyan government is the digitization of a previously cumbersome paper process, which also enables better data collection on visitors to the country.
In a statement, Julius Bitok, the principal secretary of Kenya’s Immigration and Citizen Services, likened the new ETA requirement to similar systems that are already implemented or planned in European and North American nations.
Despite the changes, there has been significant pushback. Many individuals, including experts from Kenya’s hospitality sector, argue that the ETA is merely a rebranded visa. The initial implementation encountered several logistical issues, such as website failures and confusion among travelers.
Evelyn Cheluget, Kenya’s director general of the Directorate of Immigration Services, stated in early January that the government aims to improve the ETA system's efficiency in the coming weeks. 'We have been attentive to our clients' feedback and have simplified the application form by reducing the number of questions that were causing stress,' she explained.
Chirchir noted, 'Easing travel requirements positions Kenya on equal footing with other nations. This change can convey a positive impression of Kenya's openness and hospitality to international visitors and investors.'

Reasons to Visit Kenya in 2024
In his December speech, President Ruto expressed hope that a more efficient entry process would attract more tourists to the East African nation.
Kenya is an ideal travel destination known for its rich wildlife, stunning beaches, adventurous outdoor activities, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. The country is home to 22 national parks, 28 national reserves, 5 national sanctuaries, and numerous community-run conservancies.
This new and seemingly more lenient entry system coincides with a rise in both new and renovated hotels and lodges in Kenya. Wildlife enthusiasts may want to consider staying at the new Angama Amboseli, created by the team behind the luxurious Angama Mara. Located within the community-operated Kimana Sanctuary, this lodge features 10 stylish yet natural tents, providing an ideal base for encountering the park’s renowned “super tusker” elephants and enjoying breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the Masai Mara, the JW Marriott launched its first SDinogoi lodge last year, offering 20 spacious tents, wellness amenities, and Canon EOS cameras available for use during game drives (yes, Bonvoy points are accepted).
The recently refurbished Fairmont Mount Kenya SDinogoi Club is situated at the base of the country’s highest mountain. Guests can enjoy activities such as hiking, horseback riding in the surrounding forests, or visiting a local animal orphanage from one of the 100 available rooms and suites.
Travelers visiting the Kenyan coast should consider Lamu Island, selected by Dinogo as one of our top destinations for 2024 due to its distinctive Swahili-style architecture and charming historical vibe. The Jannah, designed by artist Anna Trzebinski, features three fully-equipped suites and offers hardwood dhow boats for sunset sailing adventures.
