Nadine Mills, Star of Netflix's 'Supacell,' Discusses Travel: Her Favorite Global Destinations and Tips for Her Hometown of East London
Superheroes capture the public's imagination, and Netflix's global sensation, Supacell, is a testament to that. This six-part series follows five Black South Londoners, linked by their shared legacy of sickle cell disease — a condition predominantly impacting the Black community — who discover, to their astonishment, that they possess extraordinary abilities.
Meet “Bad gyal Sabrina,” a role brought to life by British actress Nadine Mills.
As the sole woman in the crew, her character’s empathy, straightforward demeanor, and courage ultimately unite this group of unlikely heroes, guiding them toward their shared fate.
Mills deeply connects with her character's resilience. After years juggling various jobs and barely making ends meet, she was on the verge of abandoning her acting aspirations for teaching when a chance to save the world transformed her life.
Now, the Hackney native from East London is living a life beyond her wildest dreams. Mills took a moment to speak with Dinogo about all things Supacell, sharing her top bucket list destination and offering advice for women aspiring to be the heroes of their own stories.
Dinogo: How did you land the role of Sabrina in Supacell?
Nadine Mills: I learned it had been greenlit and centered on five Black superheroes, so I rushed to my agent, saying, 'You need to get me an audition for this Netflix show!' They reassured me they were on it. Months went by with no news, until Sheila Nortley, a friend and executive producer, reached out asking if I was available. She mentioned a role that would be perfect for me — it was Supacell, and I exclaimed, 'I've been waiting for this!' I auditioned and landed the part.
What inspired you to create Sabrina’s character?
I see a lot of myself in Sabrina, which made it easy to connect with her. She embodies compassion, care, and protectiveness—qualities I share. I also spoke with a Black NHS nurse, whose experiences mirror Sabrina's, giving me deeper insight into her feelings and challenges. On the flip side, when Sabrina transforms into 'bad gyal Sabrina,' I draw from my roots in Hackney, East London. Growing up there instilled a certain fire in me; cross me, and you might just meet that side of me.
There’s much discussion about Sabrina's evolving telekinesis. What do you consider your own superpower in real life?
I love that question! I’d say my superpower is resilience, along with the ability to connect with others. I have a natural talent for building connections across all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. But resilience stands out as my primary strength.
With a successful show now under your belt, how do you carve out time for travel, which you view as essential for relaxation and rejuvenation?
Traveling is my passion! Lately, due to work commitments, it’s been tough to plan ahead—I often have to book last minute. Still, I always prioritize finding time for travel because it’s essential for my rejuvenation.
My goal is to explore the entire world before I leave it. I use an app called Visited to keep track of the countries I’ve visited, ticking them off one by one. If I can't travel abroad, I make sure to carve out time for solitude—no social media or technology, just some peaceful moments to myself.
What’s your favorite travel destination so far, and what’s on your bucket list?
Choosing a favorite is tough since I’ve traveled to several amazing countries for different reasons. However, I’d say Kenya holds a special place in my heart. I visited a few years ago, spending a few days in Nairobi before going on a three-day safari, followed by a stay at Diani Beach. The safari was unforgettable; witnessing animals in their natural habitat was breathtaking. It’s hard to describe—you truly need to experience it yourself. Documentaries don’t capture the silence and beauty of the moment. Plus, the locals were incredibly welcoming.
As for my bucket list, it’s extensive, covering the entire globe. But Bali is at the top of my list, and I need to make that trip happen this year.
We noticed you have family in Jamaica — what activities do you enjoy when you visit them?
I wish I could visit more often, but I’ve made a few trips as a child and some as an adult. Jamaica is stunning; it feels like home. I love relaxing on the beach, especially in Negril, enjoying delicious food like jerk chicken, and spending time with family. There's nothing better than sitting on the veranda with my cousins, who climb coconut trees to share fresh coconut water. I’ve done the touristy spots like Rick’s Cafe and Dunn’s River Falls, but my favorite moments are on the beach with my loved ones.
Are there any other Caribbean destinations on your travel wish list?
I’ve heard amazing things about Grenada. It’s described as beautifully untouched and less touristy, which really appeals to me.Now, let's talk about your home. Being from Hackney, East London, what should first-time visitors do to soak up the local culture and vibe?
I recommend visiting Dalston; that's where you’ll find the cultural heart of the area. There are vibrant Caribbean and African markets where you can buy fresh fruits and meats. Don't miss my favorite takeaway, Peppers and Spice, and check out All Nations Vegan House for a vegan Caribbean experience. Shoreditch, especially Brick Lane, has an artsy vibe with plenty of vintage shops for thrifting, alongside fantastic restaurants and bars. Spitalfields Market is also great, featuring independent designers and delicious dessert shops. Walking along Regent’s Canal is lovely too, with quaint restaurants and bars. East London has an energetic atmosphere both day and night.
David Reiss PhotographyWith all your travels, we have to know, are you Team Carry-On or Team Checked Bag?
It really depends on the destination. For the first time last year, I went Team Carry-On for a three-day, two-night trip to Rome, and it was amazing! I thought, 'I could travel like this forever!' Having just a backpack allowed me to explore freely, which I loved. But for a more relaxing holiday, having a checked bag is essential so you can plan your outfits.
I get this question a lot, and I sometimes feel like I should give a fancy answer! But the truth is, I don’t wear makeup daily, which lets my skin breathe. I only drink water—no soda or juice for me, though I might indulge in some fresh orange juice occasionally. In my carry-on, I always have ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm and Simple Wipes for my nighttime skincare routine.
Do you stick to a workout routine while traveling?
That’s been quite challenging! I do my best, especially when my hotel has a gym. I’ll fit in a couple of workouts, but I struggle without my personal trainer. I prefer to walk everywhere instead of taking the bus, so that helps me stay active.
Before we wrap up, what’s one piece of advice you’d give to women pursuing their dreams and waiting for their own superpower to awaken?
Just hang in there! The moment you think it’s not going to happen is often when it does. Keep pushing forward and don’t lose hope.
