New TSA Technology Could Eliminate the Need to Remove Laptops and Liquids
The Transportation Security Administration appears to have discovered a method to streamline the airport security process with the help of advanced scanners.
The newly introduced full-size Computed Tomography (CT) x-ray systems generate 3D images of carry-on luggage, allowing for improved detection of weapons, explosives, and other restricted items—much like the imaging techniques used in hospitals to examine internal body structures. This innovative technology aims to let travelers keep liquids and laptops in their bags, thereby accelerating the often slow-moving security lines.
Although the scanners are currently in the ordering phase, the agency anticipates starting their installation and rollout in U.S. airports by this summer.
“These [orders] mark a crucial step forward in bolstering aviation security,” stated TSA administrator David Pekoske. “They equip our devoted frontline officers with some of the best resources for screening passenger carry-on items while enhancing the passenger experience by allowing more items to remain in carry-on bags during the screening process.”
The TSA plans to purchase 469 base and 469 full-size CT x-ray systems, with the latter featuring fully automated screening lanes and automated bin returns. In total, these new scanners will come at a cost of approximately $781.2 million.
“The objective for the future is to allow laptops and 3-1-1 liquids to remain inside bags during checkpoint screenings,” the TSA explained in its “Computed Tomography” guide.
While we await the arrival of this advanced technology at airports, travelers can take a few steps now to reduce security wait times. The TSA PreCheck program enables passengers to keep liquids and laptops in their carry-on bags and leave on their shoes, thus saving valuable minutes in busy lines. The enrollment fee is $85, with a $70 renewal fee, and membership lasts for five years.
Another option is Clear, which is available at only a limited number of airports. This service allows passengers to check in at special kiosks using facial recognition and fingerprint scans instead of presenting ID at security checkpoints. Once your identity is confirmed against your boarding pass, an agent will escort you to the front of the security line. Membership costs $179 per year, and you can register on the Clear website. (Using the promo code “AFF149” gives you Clear for $149 for one year.)
