Next year, IHG will launch an InterContinental hotel in Cape Town.
Next year, IHG Hotels & Resorts is expanding southward with one of its most renowned luxury brands.
IHG is set to unveil the InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town in 2025, following renovations of the existing Table Bay Hotel. This property, inaugurated in 1997 by the late South African president Nelson Mandela, is located along the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, boasting views of the harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, and Table Mountain.
The hotel aims to reopen under the InterContinental name at the end of next year after undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation. Sun International, the current owner, will remain involved and manage the hotel post-renovation.
"This represents a major milestone for us in the African market," said Haitham Mattar, IHG's managing director for India, the Middle East, and Africa. "We are honored to incorporate one of Cape Town's cherished establishments into the InterContinental brand as the first in the city. With its rich heritage, stunning location, and tradition of excellence, this iconic venue truly reflects the spirit of the InterContinental brand. We are thrilled to partner with V&A Waterfront and Sun International to preserve its legacy," he added.
The InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town will become part of IHG One Rewards as the brand integrates. The renovation will feature 306 rooms, including 45 suites, and will enhance the hotel's pool bar and terrace, spa, restaurants, and reception area. An executive club floor and lounge will also be added.
Sun International CEO Anthony Leeming stated, "For nearly 30 years, we have been honored to own and operate The Table Bay Hotel. We've established it as one of the most iconic and award-winning hotels in Cape Town, welcoming dignitaries, heads of state, celebrities, and families who return annually due to their cherished experiences here."
"We are thrilled to embark on this remarkable transformation of the hotel into an InterContinental, situated in one of the finest hotel locations globally!" Leeming added.
The announcement of the InterContinental comes as numerous major hotel brands have been expanding into Africa over the past year.
Just minutes from the upcoming InterContinental, Accor's Fairmont luxury brand manages the newly renovated Cape Grace on the Cape Town waterfront. Recently, Park Hyatt Marrakech opened its doors as part of a broader expansion of the Park Hyatt brand across the continent, with plans for Park Hyatt Johannesburg to debut next year. Additionally, the JW Marriott Masai Mara offers Marriott Bonvoy members a luxury safari experience in Africa. Furthermore, Hyatt's partnership with Mr & Mrs Smith presents numerous options across northern and southern Africa, including Tanzania.
In short: If you have points saved up for your dream luxury getaway to Africa, now is the perfect time to redeem them.
