During the holiday season, Vienna attracts visitors year after year. It's the prime time for Christmas markets, with numerous options to explore. The bustling market at Rathausplatz, situated in front of the Town Hall, resembles a charming village, featuring stalls brimming with festive treats like wooden toys, bratwursts, Glühwein (mulled wine), and marzipan. Additionally, more unique markets, such as the one in Spittelberg, focus on artisanal goods like handcrafted jewelry.
The city's yearly calendar concludes with a spectacular display of fireworks welcoming the new year.

For a more tranquil experience in Vienna, consider visiting during the early part of the year. While chilly temperatures may deter some travelers, the city's warm coffee shops and intriguing museums, palaces, and galleries offer a cozy refuge. You can tour the Schloss Belvedere without bumping into crowds and enter the MuseumsQuartier’s museums without waiting in lines. Securing a table at your preferred restaurant is also much easier—except during Valentine’s week, of course.
A helpful tip: the always-popular Christmas markets, now rebranded as “New Year’s Markets,” continue into January. They offer the same charming stalls and delicious food options, but with far fewer holiday decorations and crowds than in December.
As March arrives, winter gives way to spring in the Austrian capital, prompting people to shed their heavy coats. April brings a surge of activity to the streets of Vienna with two major sporting events. The Argus Bike Festival takes over Rathausplatz and nearby areas, showcasing cyclists and featuring stalls, demos, and performances from BMX and dirt bike enthusiasts.
Later in the month, runners take the spotlight during the city’s annual marathon, which serves as a unique sightseeing tour as participants navigate past iconic Habsburg landmarks on their extended route.
At the end of May, keep an eye out for the Vienna Shorts film festival, celebrating two decades of showcasing emerging filmmakers. Additionally, Vienna Festwochen unfolds in May, featuring a diverse array of performances in theatre, art, dance, and more throughout the city.
