Polynesian Cultural Centre: Honoring Hawaiian & Island Cultures

Long before Hawaii became the 50th and final state of the USA, it was a kingdom governed by the descendants of brave Polynesian navigators. Today, visitors cruising to Hawaii can observe the lasting Polynesian impact across the islands, evident in the culture, language, and cuisine. Key Polynesian nations that have significantly shaped Hawaii include Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji, Marquesas, Samoa, and Aotearoa (New Zealand and Maori).
Activities
One of the premier spots in Hawaii to explore the islands of Polynesia and their impact on the Aloha State is the Polynesian Cultural Centre. This interactive museum spans 42 acres and is situated roughly an hour northeast of Honolulu. It's a highly engaging venue where you and your family will not only discover Polynesian influences in Hawaii but also participate in various activities and demonstrations. For instance, you can:
• Join a race on traditional island canoes
• Discover the art of throwing a Tahitian spear
• Embark on a canoe tour of the grounds and lagoon
• Enjoy performances by native Polynesian dancers atop double-hulled canoes during the "Rainbows of Paradise" water spectacle
• Understand how the Polynesians who settled in Hawaii navigated the vast ocean in their small vessels
• Explore replicas of Christian missionary settlements
Community Life
The Polynesian Cultural Centre has established six villages that showcase the island nations of Samoa, Aotearoa, Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, and Marquesas, allowing you to engage with the "locals" and learn about their everyday lives. For instance, in the Islands of Samoa village, you can discover how to create fire by rubbing sticks together or assist in cooking and tasting traditional Samoan dishes.
Visitors to the Islands of Aotearoa exhibit can observe skilled artisans carving tikis and learn about traditional Maori facial tattoos. If you wish, you can even get a temporary tattoo. Meanwhile, in the Islands of Tonga village, you might be invited on stage to showcase your talent in Tongan drumming.
Culinary Experience

The Polynesian Cultural Centre features several snack bars and is home to Gateway, one of Oahu's largest restaurants and event venues. But since you're in Hawaii, why not celebrate your visit with a traditional luau? At the Polynesian Cultural Centre, you can partake in an amazing luau in a covered outdoor space. This experience goes beyond just dinner; it includes an entertaining show with dance performances and the presentation of the imu (underground oven). The centre's buffet offers a variety of traditional Hawaiian dishes, including poi, Kalua pork, poke, and chocolate Haupia cake.
Performance Time
The Polynesian Cultural Centre also presents a separate indoor theatre performance at night, showcasing native dances, songs, and enhanced with special effects and animation.
