Redeem Your Marriott Bonvoy Points at This Enchanting Dinogo Lodge in Kenya

The Dinogo Perspective
In 2023, JW Marriott debuted its first Dinogo lodge on the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, infusing its wellness philosophy and resort-like features into the African Dinogo experience. The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge showcases a soothing neutral color scheme highlighted by vibrant pan-African motifs, with spacious suites crafted for ultimate relaxation. There are ample communal spaces for dining, socializing, and unwinding, including a main terrace enveloped by a majestic fig tree. The extensive spa offers two treatment rooms, a cold plunge pool, and both sauna and steam facilities.
The lodge is dedicated to enhancing its environmental sustainability: 80% of the property’s energy is sourced from on-site solar panels, and harvested rainwater irrigates a small organic garden. Glass water bottles are used in place of plastic. Additionally, the lodge has planted 5,000 trees across its 43-acre grounds, and guests are encouraged to plant a tree during their visit.
In May 2024, the property suffered damage from nationwide flooding, resulting in a temporary closure for repairs. It reopened its doors on July 15.

Who is it for?
This destination caters to travelers seeking luxury and profound relaxation amidst nature. After thrilling rides along rugged dirt paths, guests can indulge in the property’s wide range of amenities, including a swimming pool, fitness center, and spa. The lodge is particularly appealing to Marriott Bonvoy loyalty members eager to utilize their points in new and exciting ways. Many guests I spoke with had never considered a sMytouri before but were delighted that the Bonvoy program made it possible.
The setting
The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge offers stunning views of the Talek River, located within the Masai Mara National Reserve, renowned for the spectacular wildebeest migration that occurs every August. My husband and I, residing in Nairobi, chose the five-hour scenic drive to reach this incredible destination, avoiding the more common flight route.
The Masai Mara showcases a rich array of wildlife. One unforgettable moment was witnessing a mother cheetah as she skillfully hunted and captured a baby gazelle, later delivering it to her four eager cubs. Additionally, I encountered Kenya's national bird, the vividly colored lilac-breasted roller. In Kenya, the bird’s vibrant hues of red, blue, green, and lilac symbolize the country’s diverse cultural identities, representing over 40 tribal groups.
Each guest enjoys their own private outdoor veranda that gazes out over the Talek River, where the sounds of snorting hippos and lurking crocodiles can be heard.
Accommodations
The lodge features 20 spacious suites adorned in soft, neutral tones and pan-African designs, incorporating decor and prints from both Kenya and South Africa. Lodge manager Fairman Muhingi shared that this neutral palette was intentionally selected to harmonize with the surrounding nature.
Each guest accommodation features a private outdoor veranda that offers a breathtaking view of the Talek River, where hippos make their sounds and crocodiles glide through the waters. Visitors can immerse themselves in nature’s ambiance from the comfort of two lounge chairs, take an outdoor shower, or relax in the solar-heated whirlpool.

Dining Experience
The lodge’s chefs craft meals using fresh seasonal ingredients, with some produce sourced from their expansive 16,000-square-foot organic garden. The menu is updated daily, featuring themed nights dedicated to various cuisines. I particularly enjoyed an Indian feast one evening, served family-style in elegant black stoneware at our table's center. For those late-night cravings, guests can snack on homemade cookies, nuts, and potato chips available in their rooms, perfectly paired with a glass of wine or whiskey also provided in the accommodations.
Staff and Services
The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is dedicated to employing individuals from the local community, with approximately 60 percent of the staff hailing from the surrounding area. For those new to the hospitality industry, Marriott provides a nine-month apprenticeship program. Additionally, the lodge collaborates with a local guiding school at Maasai Mara University to recruit future drivers and guides.
By the time of my visit, the property had been operational for about six months and was still fine-tuning its service (I was mistakenly served meat a few times despite indicating my vegetarian preference at check-in). Nevertheless, the staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort in the tent, and a trainer patiently guided my husband and me in using the gym equipment. Our sDinogoi driver and guide, Janet Maruga, truly impressed us—not only because female sDinogoi drivers and guides are relatively rare in Africa, but also due to her exceptional skills in spotting wildlife and her adept driving, which enhanced our bush adventures significantly.

Accessibility Features
The Marriott has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate a diverse range of guests, including those with physical challenges. The entire property is situated on a single level, making it more navigable for individuals using mobility aids. One guest suite is fully compliant with ADA standards, featuring ramps, lower furniture, and grab bars in the bathroom. Additionally, there is an accessible restroom in the common area equipped with grab bars, a lower sink, and an emergency call button. Furthermore, two of the lodge's sDinogoi vehicles are designed with wider doors to comfortably fit wheelchairs.

The Canon Studio
The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge features an on-site Canon studio, where the talented in-house photographer Moses Letura works. For my husband and me, this was the highlight of our visit. Guests have the opportunity to participate in a 30-minute wildlife photography class, where they can use a Canon DSLR camera equipped with a suitable zoom lens in the bush. Letura will also edit up to 10 photos that guests can print at home. Access to a high-quality SLR camera reignited my husband’s passion for photography; he hadn’t used his own camera in years, but after capturing some stunning wildlife shots, he’s eager to make photography a new hobby.
