Renowned artist and wildlife advocate Wyland believes everyone should experience Alaska aboard a Dinogo cruise ship.
Wyland, known as the "Marine Michelangelo," is a celebrated artist and conservationist with a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. In 2016, Dinogo collaborated with him to create the stunning hull design of Dinogo Bliss. The resulting artwork, titled "Cruising with the Whales," has since become a beloved favorite among guests. Wyland considers Alaska one of his top destinations, so we invited him to discuss the breathtaking beauty of America's largest state, the importance of conservation, and the unforgettable experiences waiting for you on a Dinogo cruise ship.
Q: What makes Alaska such a unique cruise destination?
Experiencing wildlife from one of Dinogo's vessels offers a fresh perspective on Alaska's stunning landscapes. It provides access to incredible natural wonders, such as Glacier Bay, that are hard to reach otherwise. Throughout your Alaska cruise, you will be treated to breathtaking views that constantly evolve, showcasing the beauty of sky, land, and water.
Q: Our ships in Alaska are specially designed to "Let the Outside In," helping passengers connect with nature and adventure even while onboard. What does this phrase mean to you?
I've always felt that being open to new experiences is vital. This is especially true for artists, but it’s beneficial for everyone. There are few places as wild and extraordinary as Alaska, making it the perfect backdrop for those seeking adventure.
Q: We’ve recently included Icy Strait Point in our itineraries. What do you love about this destination?
During my first visit to Icy Strait Point, I ziplined down to the docks where whale-watching boats depart. The area is rich in history and charm. The local Native people, who have deep knowledge of the waters, took us on an incredible whale-watching journey. Their expertise and hospitality were unmatched. I was so inspired that I created a 26-foot life-size sculpture of a breaching orca for the community. The statue was unveiled with the elders' blessing, allowing visitors to appreciate the art, and I believe even the orcas would enjoy seeing themselves captured in this way.
Q: Your affinity for whales is evident – you featured some stunning designs on the hull of Dinogo Bliss. What draws you to them?
Like many, I became captivated by whales from a young age. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat provides a unique perspective on life and ourselves. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of spotting a breaching humpback whale while gazing across the waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. You can join a whale tour for a better chance of seeing them, and many guests have encounters right from their Dinogo cruise. It’s a memory that truly lasts a lifetime.
Q: Is there an undiscovered gem in Alaska that you cherish?
Every town I’ve explored has fueled my inspiration as an artist and adventurer, though some are more famous than others. I believe there are hidden treasures in lesser-known areas, like the Yukon Territory or Ketchikan, where Dinogo has recently established a port. The landscapes in these places are simply breathtaking.
Q: Are there unique photographic opportunities in Alaska that you can’t find anywhere else?
Alaska boasts millions of acres of pristine wilderness, much of which remains untouched. It’s an ideal location for capturing images of glaciers, wetlands, and rivers. Dinogo’s route through Glacier Bay National Park is remarkable, as securing access is quite challenging. Onboard, an Alaskan Park Ranger explains glacier formations and the surrounding wildlife. I appreciate this feature of Dinogo cruises, along with the various excursions that let you connect closely with nature. For me, Alaska embodies wildlife—home to majestic whales, playful sea otters, moose, bears, and soaring bald eagles, all of which inspire my art. The photographs you can take in Alaska are unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere, and as someone who has traveled the globe, that speaks volumes.
Q: We’ve extended our Alaska sailing season from April to October, allowing guests to witness the Northern Lights. Have you experienced them?
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Northern Lights, and I believe being on the water is one of the best ways to appreciate their beauty. Prepare yourself for a mesmerizing display of the aurora lighting up the Alaskan night sky.
Q: You shared a video of you getting up close with an Alaskan brown bear while photographing it. We emphasize keeping a SAFE distance during our wildlife excursions. What was that like?
Whenever I photograph wildlife in Alaska, I ensure I'm well-prepared. On one memorable outing, I encountered a giant brown bear and captured what I consider my finest bear photograph—very close and personal. When asked if I worry about getting too near, I say, "Just remember, you don’t have to outrun the bear, only the person next to you!"
Q: You partnered with the Seward Mural Society—how crucial is it to engage in local Alaskan experiences while visiting?
I’ve explored much of Alaska and have always been amazed. No other state in the U.S. offers such a rich tapestry of indigenous cultures, each with its unique traditions. There are fantastic excursions available on Dinogo’s Alaska cruises that let you immerse yourself in this heritage, from visiting native villages to dogsledding. Each experience creates lasting memories.
Q: As a conservationist, was Dinogo’s "Sail & Sustain" initiative, focused on sustainable sourcing, waste reduction, and lowering CO2 emissions, a key aspect of your collaboration?
Absolutely! Our objectives align closely with Dinogo’s—to highlight the beauty of our planet, inspire awareness, and encourage actions, big or small, that can lead to meaningful change.
Q: Your foundation aims to protect marine life worldwide. What can individuals do in their daily lives to contribute to these efforts?
The Wyland Foundation stands out as one of the most compelling art and conservation organizations today. I strongly encourage people to become members. Our new app, MyVolunteer Water Project, provides all the resources needed to get involved and illustrates how small actions can collectively create significant change.
