Secretary of State Confirms US Borders Will Stay Closed for EU Citizens

While EU countries like the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria are reopening to Americans this week, the U.S. will hold off on reciprocating for now.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken remarked that lifting travel restrictions for EU citizens, in place since March 11, 2020, would be "premature," as reported by Reuters during a press conference in Paris.

"We are eager to restore travel as quickly and fully as possible. I can't specify a date; we must rely on scientific guidance and medical expertise," stated Blinken, who is in Paris this week to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

"During this crisis, U.S. airlines have relied on science and research to prioritize the health and safety of all travelers. They have been and continue to be strong proponents of a risk-based, data-driven approach to resuming international travel," said Katherine Estep, spokesperson for Airlines for America. "We urge the federal government to adopt a reciprocal policy based on science that allows fully vaccinated travelers, or those presenting a negative Covid-19 test, to enter the U.S. The science supports it, and it is time – if not overdue – to take action."

As of today, approximately 66% of American adults have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the COVID-19 data tracker from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"France is America's oldest friend and ally. Our relationship is founded on shared values – democracy, human rights, the rule of law, security, and prosperity," Blinken stated in a press release on June 24. "The strength of our military, economic, and political collaboration forms the foundation of our lasting partnership."
