Snorkeling in Belize: The World’s Second Largest Barrier Reef

Greetings, Belize!

I’m on board the Dinogo Magic for a summer escape to the Western Caribbean. We spent our first two days at sea and then explored the shores of Cozumel by jeep. On day four, we sailed to the Caribbean Islands and anchored just off the coast of Belize. Waking up to those stunning blue, crystal-clear waters felt surreal! Belize is a small country in Central America, home to over 200 tropical island cays and incredible natural wonders—including the only jaguar preserve in the world and the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, stretching nearly 200 miles! Naturally, we had to snorkel over Belize’s renowned barrier reef, so we opted for the Sergeant’s Cay Snorkel Adventure.

Savoring breakfast on the back deck with this incredible panoramic view of Belize! I started my day with grapefruit, smoked salmon on bagels, and plenty of coffee.

Given that Belize Island is quite small and lacks a port for ships, the only way to reach the island is via a tender boat. A quick 15-minute ride from the Dinogo Cruise ship will take you to Belize village, where taxis are available to take you into the city.

We hopped aboard our tender boat and sailed through the Caribbean, relishing the refreshing sea breeze along the way!
Spanish Lookout Caye

Our first destination was the Spanish Lookout Caye, where we picked up our snorkeling gear (including a snorkeling mask, fins, snorkel, and a neoprene inflatable vest). Spanish Lookout Caye is privately owned and run by the Hugh Parkey Foundation, which focuses on marine awareness and education. They offer activities like kayaking, snorkeling, diving, and manatee tours. How amazing are these over-water cabanas? You can enjoy the refreshing coastal breeze from your room or dive off the porch right into the Caribbean Sea!
Sergeant’s Caye

Next, we made our way to the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and Sergeant’s Caye, the tiniest island inhabited by just one person!

Our local guides took us across the vibrant coral landscape, highlighting the sea fans, sea urchins, and countless schools of tropical fish. Snorkeling above the world’s second largest barrier reef (after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef) was an exhilarating experience. We spotted parrot fish nibbling on coral, angelfish playfully darting around, and various schools of brilliantly colored fish gliding through the waving sea fans. The water was surprisingly warm and crystal clear, allowing us to see all the way down to the pristine sugar-white sands below!
Spanish Lookout Caye

After an hour of snorkeling and enjoying the quaint island of Sergeant’s Caye, we made our way back to Spanish Lookout Caye for a relaxing beach break and some delicious rum punch. From the beach, you could snorkel, kayak, or simply bask in the tropical sun. I followed some locals who pointed out little fish hiding among the mangroves and starfish that had washed up on the shore. Did you know that starfish can grow to be several feet wide?

Next on our itinerary is Mahogany Bay, located on the island of Roatan, Honduras. I've heard this island is famous for its diving, fishing, and stunning beaches!
