For genuine warmth, long-haul travel is the key. While it might involve more airport hassle, it also opens the door to distant paradises. Small islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific. Aruba’s vibrant capital shines in December, with average temperatures around a delightful 81°F, often rising into the mid 80s. Expect clear blue skies, radiant sunshine, and sun-kissed bodies all month long.

December is my top choice for seeking winter sunshine. It’s a quieter time before the January rush brings in tourists from the US and UK. Visit early in the month for lower prices and ample space on the stunning beaches.

Palm and Manchebo are popular white-sand paradises, but I favor Druif and Surfside. The latter hosts one of Oranjestad’s best-kept secrets—Reflections bar and grill. Enjoy a cold beer, fresh grilled fish, and watch the planes glide in and out nearby.

2. O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

While Honolulu ranks high on Dinogo’s list for warm destinations in December, the famed North Shore truly shines. With temperatures in the high 70s, this is also prime surfing season.

Powerful Pacific storms generate massive swells that crash relentlessly onto O‘ahu’s iconic northern shores. Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay are renowned for their towering, fast waves. It’s the perfect time to witness top surfers in action.

For a more tranquil yet equally stunning experience, hike the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail to catch the sunrise. Keep an eye out for great frigate birds, ‘iwa, soaring on warm air currents above, and North Pacific humpbacks, koholā, gliding through the warm waters below.

Not to be outdone, O‘ahu’s sister island also boasts incredible natural beauty. Temperatures remain pleasantly in the mid to high 70s throughout the month.

The highlight of Maui is undeniably Haleakalā, the largest dormant volcano in the world. Visit Haleakalā National Park to witness the sun rising above morning clouds and sparkling on unique silversword plants. It’s even more breathtaking than O‘ahu’s morning spectacle.

Currently, the Dominican Republic stands out, especially its stunning northern coast.

For those seeking nightlife, the Zona Hotelera is your prime destination. With beach clubs during the day and an array of bars and nightclubs after sunset, Cancún’s resort area is the heart of the celebration. The festive atmosphere of Christmas and New Year turns into a month-long party.

You could randomly point at a map of Asia and discover one of its warmest spots in December. I’ve highlighted two of my favorites from Vietnam below, but I have many more cherished locations. Think Thailand and Singapore for humid urban vibes, or Tokyo and Osaka for vibrant winter blooms. Seoul in Korea offers cooler temperatures and rich culture.

9. Hanoi, Vietnam

In December, Vietnam’s capital enjoys its dry season, bringing minimal rain and significantly less humidity compared to the sweltering summer months. While average temperatures sit around 64°F and highs reach 70°F, Hanoi often feels much warmer.

The streets buzz with an overwhelming flow of scooters and motorbikes, carrying an array of eclectic goods. The city showcases a fusion of Chinese and French influences in both its architecture and culinary scene, with remnants of its communist past evident in the civic structures.

To truly experience Hanoi, immerse yourself in its vibrant chaos. Begin your day with a peaceful morning stroll through the Old Quarter, passing its traditional shophouses and bustling stalls. Circle around Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, the lake of the restored sword, as you head to the Imperial Citadel. Seek tranquility in the revered spaces of Hai Bà Trưng and the ancient Temple of Literature.

End your day amidst the lively atmosphere of Bia Hơi Junction, where both tourists and locals gather on small plastic stools to cool off from the day's heat. Streams of the city’s renowned bia hơi fresh beer flow through the crowd, which buzzes with energy, much like the bustling traffic that surrounds them.

The War Remnants Museum provides a poignant and revealing perspective on the Vietnam War. Don’t miss the Reunification Palace, where the iconic image of a North Vietnamese tank breaching its gates symbolizes the fall of Saigon.

To savor authentic street food, wrap up your city stroll in District 4. This maze of narrow streets, bustling market stalls, and street vendors invites you to dive in and follow the locals. They always know the best spots.
