The 32 Must-Try Restaurants in Kansas City
Kansas City has long been known as a cowtown, shaped by Black pitmasters who forged its barbecue heritage and the cattle ranchers at the Kansas City Stockyards, the second largest in the U.S. after Chicago. While barbecue, burgers, and butchery remain integral to the dining landscape, the city's culinary offerings have expanded dramatically. Nowadays, you'll find everything from hand-pulled noodle shops to vegan lunch counters alongside classic brisket sandwiches.
The common thread in Kansas City’s dining scene isn’t defined by a single ingredient or culinary style; rather, it’s the warm Midwestern hospitality that brings a sense of comfort and charm to even the finest dining establishments. Dress up for dinner if you wish, but casual attire is perfectly acceptable, especially when enjoying barbecue. Whether exploring upscale tasting rooms in downtown KCMO or the laid-back carnicerias in KCK, every restaurant strives to make you feel at home.

Chang Kitchen. A new dine-in area was added in spring 2024.

Though seating is limited and lines can stretch outside during busy hours, locals often call ahead to pick up their orders and skip the wait.

The cocktails are uniquely crafted, showcased in creative glassware with elaborate garnishes. The wine selection by the glass and no-alcohol drinks are equally impressive (the non-alcoholic Negroni is remarkably convincing).
