The Allure of Padre Island National Seashore for Nature Enthusiasts
A sunny haven of sea and sand, Corpus Christi serves as the gateway to the tranquil beauty of North Padre Island’s National Seashore. This 66-mile stretch of protected coastline offers easy access from the city, providing a serene escape where you can reconnect with nature. The island remains largely undeveloped, granting visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy expansive views of unbroken sand and surf.
Immerse Yourself in Wildlife
Explore Corpus Christi
Padre Island National Seashore, a coastal prairie habitat, hosts a rich array of wildlife, including coyotes, deer, jackrabbits, ghost crabs, and over 380 bird species. This biodiversity makes it a premier birdwatching destination, contributing to Corpus Christi's title as the nation’s “Birdiest City” for over ten years. The National Audubon Society recognizes Laguna Madre, a shallow lagoon in Bird Island Basin, as one of the nation’s most significant birding areas. For a closer look at the island's unique wildlife, take a leisurely stroll along the .75-mile-long Grasslands Nature Trail, which winds through sand dunes and grasslands.
Spanning over 130,000 federally protected acres, this area is crucial for various endangered species, including the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. These gentle creatures come ashore each spring to lay their eggs, and by June, the tiny hatchlings emerge, making their way to the ocean. Park rangers at Padre Island are on hand to assist during this process. If you visit between mid-June and August, don’t miss the sea turtle hatchling release—a truly unforgettable experience.

Enjoy a Night on the Beach
If a day spent exploring the island’s distinctive flora and fauna isn’t sufficient, consider extending your adventure overnight. This national park provides camping options for tents and RVs right on the beach. With minimal light pollution from the city, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the night sky. Don’t miss the incredible stargazing opportunities at South Beach and the North End Observatory near the Malaquite Beach Visitors Center.
Discover the Fun at Bird Island Basin
Bird Island Basin, a recreational hotspot on the island, features a campground for tents and RVs equipped with chemical toilets (for flush toilets and cold-water showers, visit the Malaquite Pavilion Bathhouse). This camping area is a birdwatcher's dream and a favored location for fishing and boating, offering the only boat ramp access to Laguna Madre.
Explore the Salty Waters of Laguna Madre
Explore Corpus Christi
Laguna Madre Bay can be considered the jewel of the island, renowned as the premier flat-water sailing destination in the U.S. Windsurfing here is truly unparalleled. Beyond its appeal to water sports lovers, this lagoon is famous for being one of only six “hypersaline” lagoons in the world, ranking among the saltiest waters on the planet.
The lagoon is a vibrant ecosystem, home to various crustaceans and seagrasses, along with migratory birds like Canadian geese, mallard ducks, and 80 percent of North America’s redhead ducks during winter. Plus, soaking in saltwater is said to offer numerous health benefits, perfect for those seeking relaxation.
Take an Island Cruise
While wandering along the island can be rejuvenating, driving is the best way to explore the extensive quiet beaches. On windy days, enjoying the ocean views from your car can be quite pleasant. Only one area, aptly named Closed Beach, restricts vehicle access. For a day free of cars, spend your time at Malaquite Beach, part of the Closed Beach area where vehicles are not permitted on the sand.
