Among enthusiasts, metal credit cards have always been a mark of prestige. There’s something unique about placing your Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire on the table when splitting a bill. But a credit card made from a retired Boeing 747? That’s a conversation starter like no other. American Express and Delta are reintroducing the chance for Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card members to obtain cards crafted from recycled airplane metal.
“We took apart the plane to create the card,” said Anthony Cirri, EVP, head of Global Consumer Lending and CoBrand at American Express, reflecting on the card’s initial launch in 2022. Now available until June 5, 2024—while supplies last—the new limited-edition Boeing 747 cards are made with 33 percent metal sourced from two retired Delta Boeing 747 aircraft. There are double the units available this time around due to previous high demand.
“We’re thrilled that this will spark conversations,” said Dwight James, senior vice president of Customer Engagement & Loyalty at Delta Air Lines and CEO of Delta Vacations. “When you bring your friends out for dinner, they’ll be curious and ask, ‘What’s this card? Tell me more about it.’”
These cards typically feature purple metal or 70 percent reclaimed plastic. However, those who choose the new design will receive a white metal card adorned with a silver illustration of the 747 on the front, along with details about the aircraft, including the miles flown and its retirement date. (The previous version of this card was black.)
Dubbed the “Queen of the Skies,” the Boeing 747 made its debut as the first wide-body jet in 1969. U.S. passenger airlines have since retired these double-decker aircraft in favor of newer models, and Boeing ceased production of the legendary jumbo jets at the start of 2023, having delivered its final 747 to Atlas Air. Securing one of these credit cards means you’ll possess a piece of aviation history.
