During my autumn road trip around Iceland, I thought I had adequately prepared for the weather, but I learned I could have been more thorough with my packing. To help you avoid my mistakes, we spoke with Ryan Connolly, co-owner of Hidden Iceland, and Kristijan Svajnzger, general manager of Intrepid DMC Europe, to gather their essential packing recommendations. Being prepared for both warmer and cooler days means a lightweight fleece layer is perfect for staying comfortable.

A reliable set of thermal underwear is essential for keeping warm and dry during your Icelandic adventures. A warm, snug fit close to your skin helps maintain insulation effectively,” he explains.

During my stay in Iceland, I wore these fleece-lined leggings daily and found their water-resistant fabric effective at keeping my legs dry during a light drizzle while hiking. They also provided excellent warmth when layered under waterproof pants on particularly cold days.

Even blackout curtains may not fully prevent the sun from shining through,” explains Connolly. This weighted eye mask is perfect for catching some sleep when jet-lagged and for dimming bright city lights at home and on overnight flights.

When traveling to a foreign country, it’s crucial to verify the type of outlet available in your accommodation.   The weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, making packing tricky. “You can experience all four seasons in a single day… one moment it's snowing; the next, you might catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis. Proper clothing is essential,” warns Svajnzger. As Iceland lies at the Arctic Circle's edge, winter temperatures range from 30 to 33 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer can reach up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, factoring in humidity and wind chill. “Iceland is rarely as cold or as hot as people think,” Connolly explains.

• How do water-resistant and waterproof gear differ?

  When selecting clothing for Iceland, prioritize items labeled as waterproof rather than just water-resistant. Waterproof gear is built to repel water under all conditions, while water-resistant items can handle some moisture but may eventually allow water to penetrate.
