The Revival of a Classic: A Warm Welcome Back to Canoe Place

Much like the stunning landscapes of the French Riviera and the Amalfi Coast, the Hamptons epitomize timeless coastal elegance. Nestled near the eastern tip of Long Island, Hampton Bays—the first stop out East—is the Hamptons beach town closest to New York City, and it’s once again home to a remarkable hotel. Among the historic hotels that grace the U.S. landscape, few are as cherished and storied as the recently renovated Canoe Place Inn and Cottages. This property embraces a refined interpretation of the Hamptons lifestyle, offering tastefully redesigned accommodations, farm-to-table dining, and a spa developed in collaboration with ONDA by Naomi Watts.
The Origin Story

If the walls of Canoe Place could speak, they would narrate tales worthy of bestseller status. Recognized as the site of America’s oldest inn, Canoe Place reopened its doors this summer, preserving much of its original character while transforming into a chic boutique destination for today’s sophisticated travelers. This next chapter of the historic property continues the legacy of a beloved location frequented by notable figures from the past.
Canoe Place first made its mark as a significant resting place for weary travelers and horses in 1697, named after its early role as a Native American portage site. Following the Revolutionary War, this modest lodging evolved into a hub of importance, becoming a refined social venue for prominent personalities and politicians alike.
Over the following two centuries, under various ownerships, Canoe Place solidified its status as a premier getaway for vacationers. Ernest A. Buchmuller of the Waldorf Astoria and his stepson Louis transformed the inn into a reputable resort hotel, enduring catastrophic fires and a prohibition-era closure initiated by Federal agents posing as affluent guests during the height of the Roaring 20s.
The new proprietors behind the renovation, cousins Gregg and Mitchell Rechler of Rechler Equity Partners, were determined not to allow this American gem to fade into obscurity; for over a decade, they have focused on revitalizing Canoe Place to restore its former glory. Today, the accommodations feature 20 guest rooms and suites, five cottages, and residential-style boathouses set across six picturesque acres along the Shinnecock canal.
Beyond just a hotel

The Colonial-inspired architecture has always served as a significant gathering spot, and throughout its various incarnations—from a nightclub complex to a dance hall—Canoe Place has been recognized as a vital cultural hub. Exceptional hospitality continues to be the foundation of this establishment, inviting both visitors and locals to linger and appreciate the beauty and history of this U.S. landmark.
After a decade of comprehensive renovation, the new vision for Canoe Place retains the hotel’s historical essence while offering a contemporary interpretation of the original inn. Collaborating with the acclaimed Brooklyn-based interior design firm Workstead, the redesign embraces a “garden-by-the-sea” theme. The chic, vintage-inspired decor, characterized by relaxed comfort and trellis-patterned wallpaper, harmonizes perfectly with the preserved original fireplaces and vaulted ceilings of the grand ballroom and pavilion. Each stylish guest suite and cottage is furnished with modern decor and eco-friendly bath products from Costa Brazil.
Art enthusiasts will be enchanted by the collection of paintings and sculptures featuring works from notable artists such as Doug Aitken and James Turrell, whose Lapsed Quaker Ware pieces are elegantly showcased in the Canoe Place foyer. Additional highlights include Chief Pretty Eagle by Choctaw-Cherokee artist Jeffrey Gibson and Tony Tasset’s impressive 12-foot deer statue crafted from fiberglass and steel.
Stunning design and exquisite dining

Canoe Place continues its legacy as a cultural hub with exceptional culinary experiences led by award-winning Chef Ülfet Ralph. A veteran of Relais & Château, Ralph infuses her Mediterranean heritage into a globally inspired menu that evolves with the seasons. Collaborating with local farmers, artisanal producers, and fishermen from the East End community, the culinary team at Canoe Place selects the freshest, highest-quality ingredients available throughout the year.
Begin your evening with a refreshing summer gazpacho made from vine-ripened red tomatoes, then share a delightful grilled watermelon and feta salad accompanied by wood-fired local bass and a medley of organic vegetables. Save space for dessert and treat yourself to a local favorite like lemon semifreddo topped with apricot meringue and peaches, or indulge in a rich chocolate cake. For a truly decadent experience, don’t miss the filo bread pudding, featuring banana, cardamom cream, and coffee bourbon sauce—perfectly paired with an extra shot of whiskey or a skillfully crafted Sazerac at the bar.
An oasis for self-care

What would a grand hotel be without a wellness sanctuary? Tucked within the beautifully restored Canoe Place Inn is a luxurious full-service spa developed in collaboration with the renowned ONDA Beauty Team. ONDA at Canoe Place features exclusive treatments like the Rejuvenating Facial and Body Bliss treatment, as well as signature experiences such as the Ultimate Lift Facial and Total Wellness Massage, complemented by a curated selection of clean and sustainable beauty products.
Joining the ranks of previous admirers, ONDA cofounder Naomi Watts brings her wellness expertise to Canoe Place, offering esthetician-led facials, massages, and energy healing for guests. “I, along with the entire ONDA team, am so excited to collaborate with the storied Canoe Place,” Watts expressed. “We’re captivated by the property’s history and eager to share it with our cherished fans.” Every aspect of Canoe Place is poised for rediscovery.
