The top experiences to have in Saudi Arabia, as recommended by those who know it best

Once off-limits to tourists, Saudi Arabia remains an undiscovered gem for many travelers today.
However, this is rapidly changing. In 2023, the country saw a 56% increase in international visitors compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the UNWTO.
So, what are the must-visit destinations in this fast-emerging travel hotspot?
We reached out to those who are familiar with the country – from frequent visitors to Saudis themselves. Here’s what they suggest:
AlUla

Known as a living museum, AlUla is famous for its ancient dwellings, striking rock formations, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Saudi Arabia.
Lojain Omran, a Saudi TV personality and star of Netflix’s UAE-based reality show “Dubai Bling,” is an avid fan of the site.
"It’s like no place else on Earth, truly enchanting," she shares with Dinogo. Speaking via email, she adds, "The peace and tranquility in AlUla are unparalleled. If you're into meditation or just seeking relaxation, AlUla is the ideal retreat. It’s secluded, far from the chaos of crowds and city noise."
Omran, also an actress, mentions that during her visits, she stays at the Banyan Tree AlUla, a favorite among the A-list crowd, offering private tented villas.
"It blends luxury, seclusion, and serenity, all complemented by outstanding service for every guest," she says.
Omran is optimistic that visitors will explore more of what Saudi Arabia has to offer.
"The Kingdom is expansive, and each region has its own distinct appeal, from nature and ambiance to cuisine, customs, and traditions, all adding to the richness of our cultural experiences," she explains.
Jeddah’s Historic Old Town
A must-see in Saudi Arabia’s second-largest city is a stroll through the narrow alleys of the Al Balad district, where ancient coral stone and wooden structures tell captivating tales of the past.
Founded in the 7th century, Al Balad was once the vibrant center of Jeddah and remains a top attraction today.
Mai Eldib, Senior Vice President at Sotheby’s in the Middle East, has witnessed significant transformations in Saudi Arabia over the past eight years and always makes sure to visit this intriguing area when she’s in Jeddah.
"The charm of the old town lies in its timelessness; it tells the story of Jeddah as a bustling port city – a true cultural crossroads, where many people who came for Hajj settled and built their lives," says Eldib.
"The government is making a significant effort to preserve and restore the Ottoman houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and it’s incredible to witness the revival and rejuvenation of these historic neighborhoods,"
Eldib especially recommends visiting Jeddah’s Angawi House.
"I was absolutely stunned the first time I saw this magnificent private home. It’s a true fusion of vibrant colors, exquisite craftsmanship, rich history, and contemporary design," she shares. "It’s an unforgettable introduction to Saudi Arabia’s past and present."
Al Nawras Island

"When you think of islands in Saudi Arabia, you can’t skip Al Nawras Island, which has quickly become a favorite among tourists and a cherished spot for locals," says Saudi professional boxer Ziyad Almaayouf to Dinogo.
"I personally love hopping on a rented boat or a friend’s yacht to visit Al Nawras Island as often as I can, and I highly recommend that tourists do the same!"
Ziyad, who resides in California, enjoys the serenity of Al Nawras Island, located along the Red Sea coastline just north of Jeddah. "What I love most about Al Nawras Island isn’t the island itself, but the stunning waters that surround it," he shares.
"Anchor the yacht just before reaching the island to take in the scenery and the crystal-clear waters for the day. It truly feels like a piece of paradise and remains a hidden gem."
When he’s away training, Ziyad shares that he longs for the comfort of traditional Saudi culture and the warmth of home.
"I miss having dinner with my entire family – parents, grandparents, siblings, and cousins – all gathered around one table as a symbol of togetherness," he says. "And I really miss the cultural tradition of eating with our hands. Believe it or not, eating with your hands elevates the whole dining experience. I absolutely love it."
Stargazing in Unaizah
Saudi aerospace engineer Mishaal Ashemimry says she remains in awe of the mesmerizing desert sand dunes surrounding Unaizah, a small city just northwest of Riyadh. She credits these dunes with sparking her passion for space exploration when she was just six years old.
"My mom took me to the desert dunes on our farm in Unaizah at night," she recalls. "The sky was so dark, and the only light was from the stars above. Back then, there was little light pollution, and the sky was thick with stars – it was truly captivating."
"Staring up at the sky that night changed my life. It set the direction for my future, inspiring me to become an aerospace engineer and pursue a career exploring space and uncovering the mysteries of the stars and our universe,"
Now the founder and CEO of MISHAAL Aerospace, Mishaal continues to visit her childhood stomping grounds and proudly champions her heritage through her work.
"As an Arab, exploration is in my blood, and seeking knowledge to expand our understanding of the cosmos is the ultimate goal," she shares.
Mishaal is just as passionate about discovering more of her own vast homeland. "One of my dreams is to fly a twin-engine plane across Saudi Arabia, exploring every city," she reveals.
Riyadh’s Souk Al Zal

Tamtam, a Riyadh-born singer, gained worldwide attention in 2014 with her song "Gender Game," which tackles the struggles Saudi women face with powerful lyrics.
Although she’s one of Saudi Arabia’s most successful cultural exports, Tamtam, also known as Reem Altamimi, loves returning home to immerse herself in the energy of familiar places, like the historic Souk Al Zal in Riyadh’s Al Dirah district.
"Souk Al Zal may be a typical tourist spot in Riyadh, but it’s one of my personal favorites. It’s one of the oldest traditional markets in the city," she shares with Dinogo.
With a rich history spanning over 100 years, this traditional market is famous for its narrow shops filled with the fragrances of incense and oud, as well as its daily antiques auction.
"It’s also just a short distance from Masmak Fort, another must-visit landmark in the city," says the Los Angeles-based singer, referencing the restored 19th-century mudbrick fortress.
Drawn in by the enticing aroma of Ethiopian coffee and freshly baked brownies, Tamtam is a regular at one of Riyadh’s favorite coffee spots, Ba’a Bakehouse.
"It’s locally owned, really stands out among the city’s coffee shops, and I love its location," she says.
Diriyah’s UNESCO World Heritage Site
Founded in the 15th century, Diriyah is the birthplace of the nation’s royal family.
Hatem Alakeel, the Saudi founder of the luxury consulting and creative production agency Authenticite, believes Diriyah, located west of Riyadh, is already a must-visit destination.
"Diriyah is the birthplace of the kingdom and embodies the unity, beauty, and resilience of Saudi Arabia and its people," he says.
"Known as the land of kings and heroes due to its profound historical importance, Diriyah has been meticulously restored to offer visitors the chance to walk in the footsteps of generations and immerse themselves in Saudi Arabia’s rich history and culture in an authentic setting."
Umluj

With its breathtaking beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and sparkling turquoise waters, Umluj offers a sharp contrast to Saudi Arabia’s well-known desert landscapes.
The resort, nestled along the Red Sea coast, is often referred to as "the Maldives of Saudi Arabia," offering a variety of water sports and cultural activities.
"This tranquil coastal region is a sanctuary of natural beauty, providing the perfect peaceful retreat from the busy world," says Saudi American documentary photographer Tasneem Alsultan.
"With its untouched beaches and crystal-clear waters, it’s a hidden paradise for those in search of peace and serenity,"
Tasneem, who has spent recent years documenting social transformations in Saudi Arabia, adds: "The charm of Saudi Arabia lies in its remarkable mix of tradition, hospitality, and the fascinating stories that await discovery."
"Our society is a rich tapestry of generosity, deep-rooted Arab traditions, and a commitment to storytelling in all its forms. The warmth of our people, the richness of our cultural heritage, and the dynamic stories embedded in every aspect of life make Saudi Arabia an extraordinary destination."
