The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2016 has been revealed.
What’s currently the most sought-after reservation in the culinary world?
Osteria Francescana from Italy has taken the crown, surpassing Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca to become number one on the 2016 World’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking.
Osteria Francescana, which placed second in the previous year’s awards, is nestled in Modena, a charming city in Italy's Emilia Romagna region.
The restaurant is led by Massimo Bottura, a visionary chef who has transformed traditional Italian cuisine with dishes that balance innovation and heritage, stimulating every sense.
El Celler de Can Roca, the reigning champion from last year, secured second place, while Eleven Madison Park from New York climbed two spots to claim third place.
During his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony in New York on June 13, an overjoyed Bottura proudly waved an Italian flag and expressed how emotional he felt, nearly moved to tears.
"I want to express my gratitude to everyone," he shared with the audience.
"Our work is all about dedication. People often view us as celebrities, but it’s not about that. It’s about the everyday effort we put in the kitchen to excel and achieve success," he explained.
The top 10 highlights of the rankings this year.
The top 10 this year featured many familiar names from the culinary world.
Central in Lima, led by Virgilio Martinez, maintained its fourth-place ranking. Last September, it also claimed the top spot on the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list for the second consecutive year.
Copenhagen’s Noma, which won the title in 2014 and is renowned for pioneering 'new Nordic cuisine', slipped from third to fifth this year.
Mirazur in Menton, France, made a significant leap, moving from 11th to sixth place, while Mugaritz in San Sebastian fell one spot to seventh.
Narisawa from Tokyo, ranked second on Asia’s 2016 Best Restaurants list, retained its position in eighth place.
Steirereck in Vienna made its top 10 debut, claiming ninth place, alongside Spain’s Asador Etxebarri, which also entered the top 10. Last year’s biggest climber, the Spanish barbecue spot, jumped from 13th to secure the 10th spot in 2016.
One of the evening’s most unexpected developments was the steep fall of London’s Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.
Once ranked seventh, it tumbled to 45th place this year.
Another significant absentee from the top 10 was Gaggan, Asia’s former number one.
The renowned Indian restaurant in Bangkok dropped from 10th place last year to 23rd this year.

Perhaps less shocking – given the frequent criticism of the list’s male dominance – was the notable lack of female-led restaurants.
Dominique Crenn of Atelier Crenn was named 'World’s Best Female Chef,' while Tokyo's Den received the 'One to Watch' award.
Pierre Herme from France was recognized as the best pastry chef.
The 'Chef’s Choice Award,' decided by chefs on the 50 Best list, was presented to Joan Roca of El Celler de Can Roca.
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Alain Passard, the acclaimed chef behind the Michelin three-star restaurant L'Arpège in Paris.
Organizers revealed that the rankings were determined by an 'independent' panel of 1,000 judges, whose results were subject to further review.
This year's prestigious awards ceremony, often called the Oscars of fine dining, was held in New York – marking the first time it was hosted outside of London in an effort to make the event more 'truly global.'
It was also announced during the ceremony that the 2017 World’s 50 Best ceremony would be held in Melbourne, Australia.
