These micro-cabins on a stunning Canadian island offer the ultimate off-grid getaway
As soon as you step onto the tranquil grounds of Prince Edward Island, a wave of serenity washes over you, the pace of life slowing down and the air refreshing with the essence of Atlantic Canada. There’s no better spot to carve out your personal retreat than at Meridian 63°’s off-the-grid micro-cabins, which welcomed guests last fall.
Named after the meridian it occupies, this collection of four luxurious cabins is situated in Strathgartney Provincial Park, just off the Trans Canada Highway in Bonshaw, about a 20-minute drive west of Charlottetown, the provincial capital.
"Our main goal is for guests to unwind, relax, and appreciate nature during their stay at Meridian 63°," shared owner Mike Robertson with Dinogo. "While our cabins provide comforts that surpass conventional camping, we aim to evoke that camping spirit without the usual hassle of setting up. We work to equip our guests with everything they need to fully enjoy our charming island."

The living area is furnished with a loveseat, ottoman, chair, cooler, and side tables, while the utility section includes a sink. Access to the lofted sleeping area, which contains a queen mattress from the Canadian brand Endy, is via a ladder.
Just outside, there’s a picnic table and firepit equipped with a cooking grill, while the communal area features a guest house with a restroom that includes spacious rainfall showers, alongside a kitchen complete with a fridge, stove, sink, cooking essentials, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa.

"This area of PEI is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts," noted Robertson, highlighting the proximity of the Brookvale Nordic Centre. "We are fortunate to be surrounded by 25 kilometers [about 15.5 miles] of single-track trails, just steps from the cabin entrance. Our unique offering includes off-grid accommodations for all seasons, suitable for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, and the increasingly popular fat biking."
Meridian 63° has a strong passion for exploring nature on two wheels, having originated as a mountain biking lessons and tour company before branching out into accommodations — and it continues to encourage guests to take their bikes for a ride.
A lifelong resident of PEI, Robertson was raised in "a traditional fishing and farming family" before venturing into tourism two decades ago. "I’ve felt connected to Strathgartney Park since the 1990s when I began mountain biking and camping in the area," he shared. "Over the years, my love for this place has only grown stronger."

"What truly sets this location apart is the stunning view of the PEI countryside and West River," he remarked. "Experiencing both sunrise and sunset from the cabin decks is unforgettable, as is spotting cruise ships leaving Charlottetown harbor at night."
Visitors share their thoughts. One guest wrote in the guest book, "I needed a place to recharge and reflect, and this was just perfect," while another commented, "The accommodations were absolutely delightful." A family with an 11-month-old and a dog remarked, "A getaway that disconnected us from our devices was exactly what we desired...thank you for crafting such a wonderful place to visit. We created so many cherished family memories here."
That’s precisely Robertson’s objective. "Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, our aim is to provide a memorable experience for every guest," he stated.
