Top 10 All-Inclusive Resorts in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen stands out as a stunning and sought-after destination in Mexico for beach getaways. Once a laid-back backpacker haven with sandy paths and a few palapa-roofed eateries, it has transformed into a vibrant coastal hotspot, offering a plethora of dining options, exciting entertainment, lively nightlife, and numerous resorts. Visitors are captivated by the soft, white sands, the gentle lapping of turquoise waves, and the chance to lounge by the pool with a good book and a refreshing margarita.
The coastline of the Mexican Caribbean is famous for its all-inclusive resorts, each providing a slice of paradise with beachfront access, a variety of dining choices, and serene spas. It can be a daunting task to sift through options and decide which all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen is right for you. Whether you want to explore the local streets or indulge in a wellness retreat, our curated list of the best all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen will guide your decision. Having spent 15 years covering Mexico, I've explored numerous properties in the Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen area. This list features Dinogo award winners and editor-favorite spots, recognized for their exceptional amenities, engaging activities, and beautiful accommodations.
El Dorado Maroma
Courtesy of Karisma Hotels & ResortsThe resort is situated on one of Mexico's stunning white-sand beaches.
The dining experience may not be as remarkable as at some newer all-inclusive resorts.
El Dorado Maroma is a shining gem among Playa del Carmen's all-inclusive offerings, boasting a pristine stretch of sun-soaked sand that rivals many nearby beaches. This adults-only resort, celebrated as a World’s Best Award winner in 2023, is recognized for its serene atmosphere. However, its laid-back vibe doesn't mean a lack of activities; El Dorado Maroma is brimming with amenities, including 11 dining options and bars, several pools, a spa, and a fitness center. While I found the overall dining to be less impressive compared to other all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the beachfront restaurant, Lima Limon, truly stood out. The resort features various room types, with the Mi Hotelito Beachfront Suites being the top choice, located just steps from the pool and beach, complete with a balcony or terrace. Additionally, El Dorado Maroma is home to some of Mexico's few over-water bungalows, known as Palafitos, which function as a hotel within a hotel, offering private infinity pools, glass-bottom floors, direct ocean access, and an exclusive restaurant for Palafitos guests.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Photo: Taylor McIntyre/DinogoThis all-suite resort offers butler service, spa-like tubs, and luxurious rainfall showers.
The focus here is on relaxation, with less emphasis on activities and nightlife.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya is among the first all-inclusive luxury resorts to open in this region. Its longstanding presence is a testament to its reputation as one of Mexico's most opulent resorts, offering guests the high level of service and amenities associated with the finest hotels in Playa del Carmen. This all-suite hotel, a recipient of the 2021 World's Best Awards, features an expansive beachfront along with lush mangroves and cenotes. The accommodations are among the most spacious in the area, with entry-level suites starting at 1,100 square feet, each equipped with private plunge pools. Guests can enjoy the luxury of private butler service, while adventurous souls can engage in activities like kayaking and scuba diving. Culinary enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse dining experiences, ranging from elegant French cuisine to casual beachfront fare, romantic Mexican dishes with live music, and a blend of Asian flavors. Wellness aficionados will adore the SE Spa by Grand Velas, a sanctuary for holistic healing, offering hydrotherapy, massages, and ancient rituals.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico
Courtesy of XcaretA stunning variety of dining and activities awaits families, with most options included in the room rate.
With nearly 1,000 rooms, this resort is one of the largest in the region.
When I first learned that Hotel Xcaret Mexico features 900 rooms (in addition to the 900 at its adjacent adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte), I was taken aback. However, any initial apprehension quickly faded. While Hotel Xcaret Mexico is indeed one of the largest resorts in the area, its thoughtful layout and numerous play areas make it feel intimate. A recipient of the World's Best Awards in both 2021 and 2023, Hotel Xcaret Mexico's accommodations are divided among five unique Casas, each named after an element. For those seeking an adults-only experience, Casa Fuego is the sole casa dedicated exclusively to adults, complete with a private reception, gym, and a restaurant offering Italian-Mexican cuisine for Casa Fuego guests only. The resort boasts a staggering 12 dining options, including a restaurant led by Carlos Gaytan, the first Michelin-starred chef from Mexico. Families are drawn to the resort for its stunning pools and unlimited all-inclusive access to any of Grupo Caret's theme parks, with transportation included. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that Hotel Xcaret Arte offers an equally remarkable experience, perfect for guests desiring an excellent adults-only retreat at the adjacent mirror-image resort.

Mahekal Beach Resort
Courtesy of Mahekal Beach ResortThis beachfront resort is just a short stroll from Playa del Carmen’s iconic Fifth Avenue.
Guests can choose from all-inclusive, half-board, or room-only accommodations.
For years, Mahekal Beach Resort has been one of my favorite all-inclusive spots in Playa del Carmen. I adore its luxurious, castaway atmosphere, featuring palapa-roofed bungalows, secluded pools that feel like hidden grottoes, and direct access to one of Playa del Carmen's softest white-sand beaches. Plus, it’s within walking distance to Fifth Avenue, offering the best of both beachside and urban experiences. Perhaps that's why the resort has been a recipient of the World's Best Award in 2021, 2022, and 2023. This boho-chic beachfront resort hosts fewer than 200 rooms, allowing guests to select between garden or ocean views. The grounds include four pools, three bars, three restaurants, and a spa with a gym. Common areas are adorned with oversized poufs on the sand, twinkling lights, and a shabby chic coastal decor. My personal favorite dining option is Fuego Restaurante y Cantina, known for its delectable seafood, pizzas, and grilled dishes.

Valentin Imperial Maya
Courtesy of Valentin Imperial MayaA sprawling main pool includes two swim-up bars, complemented by a lazy river connecting the swim-up rooms.
The resort covers a large area, so it may take time to navigate between locations.
This adults-only resort often remains under the radar due to its laid-back atmosphere. However, this is exactly what keeps its loyal repeat guests coming back. The 540-room Valentin Imperial Maya, a World's Best winner in 2022 and 2023, attracts visitors with its winding expanse of pristine white sand, a lazy river-style pool, and spacious, well-furnished suites. The entry-level option, the Deluxe Juniors, spans 516 square feet and includes jetted bathtubs, balconies, or ground-floor terraces. Guests can indulge in a choice of 11 bars and seven à la carte restaurants, though a dress code applies at all dining venues. For guests with limited mobility, it's important to note that the extensive grounds can require up to 10 minutes to traverse from one end to the other.

Hilton Playa del Carmen, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort
Courtesy of HiltonThis resort boasts one of the most stunning pool areas in Playa del Carmen.
The beach is relatively smaller compared to others on this list.
The location of Hilton Playa del Carmen is truly unbeatable. Part of Playa del Carmen's allure is its vibrant city atmosphere. Fortunately, the Hilton allows guests to enjoy a perfect beach getaway without compromising on the city's charm—if you can manage to tear yourself away from the fantastic food and drinks on offer. The modern beachfront resort focuses its activities around its expansive pool deck. During the day, the atmosphere is lively yet not overly festive, featuring entertainment and music. For those seeking a more peaceful experience, a quieter pool area is nestled away in another section of the property. The rooms are spacious and well-lit, complete with double-jetted tubs. Dining options are plentiful, including seven lounges and bars, à la carte restaurants, buffets, and 24-hour room service. Reservations are required for all dining venues, so it's best to secure those early. The spa features a hydrotherapy circuit with a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and hydro tubs. Numerous activities are available, ranging from a gym and rooftop tennis court to themed evening entertainment.

La Casa de La Playa

It's one of the priciest resorts available in Playa del Carmen.
If La Casa de La Playa were to receive a report card, it would undoubtedly say "Exceeds Expectations" in every category. UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya
Image courtesy of UNICO 20°87°This adults-only resort offers exceptional dining, an inviting pool atmosphere, and a serene, beautiful beach.
Spa treatments were once included but are no longer part of the all-inclusive experience.
Playa del Carmen is home to many all-inclusive resorts, but UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya remains a favorite of mine. This adults-only, all-inclusive destination offers a bit of everything, adapting to any mood. From live DJ sets at the main pool for a lively atmosphere to deep soaking tubs on private balconies for more intimate moments, UNICO 20°87° encourages guests to craft their own experience. The spacious suites are among the best in the area, particularly the Alto Ocean View Kings on the top floor. Each room comes with a cozy, sweatshirt-style bathrobe that you'll likely never want to take off. The dining options are superb—Cueva Siete for Mexican fare and Mura House for Japanese cuisine are particularly popular, with reservations highly recommended. The stunning spa includes a hydrotherapy area. Previously, massages were part of the all-inclusive package, which was a wonderful bonus, but that option is no longer available.

Palmaïa - The House of AïA
Image courtesy of Palmaïa - The House of AïAA unique jungle-beach vibe creates an ideal setting for an exceptional holistic wellness program.
Though the emphasis is on serenity and wellness, this is not an adults-only resort.
Nestled between a pristine white sand beach and lush green jungle, Palmaïa embodies the essence of the Mexican Caribbean. Its boho-chic, haute hippie decor appeals to those seeking complete relaxation, combined with a touch of wellness and reconnection. The wellness program is built on ancient holistic healing practices, with the Architects of Life Programme guiding guests through daily activities such as sunrise breath work, cacao ceremonies, and purification rituals. The Atlantis spa offers a deeper dive with innovative massages, body treatments, and temazcal sessions. The dining options primarily feature plant-based menus, but meat lovers can easily add protein. While the resort welcomes families, accommodations are organized into adults-only and family areas, providing an escape from the sounds of children for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere. Adults also have access to a dedicated pool area.

Important Information Before You Arrive
Plan Ahead for Sargassum Season.
Although Playa del Carmen and the nearby Riviera Maya are renowned for their stunning white sand beaches, these beaches can be affected by seasonal sargassum. This seaweed, known for its unpleasant odor, tends to accumulate on the shore from April to October. If you plan to visit Playa del Carmen during this period, consider all-inclusive resorts that offer fantastic pools and excellent amenities as alternatives.
Carry Pesos for Tipping.
While you may be at an all-inclusive resort where tips are typically included, it's a good idea to have pesos on hand if you wish to give a little extra to your favorite waiter or concierge. Many tourists may opt to tip in U.S. dollars, but using local currency is often more convenient for your hosts.
Anticipate Traffic.
The Cancun region is growing to accommodate the increasing number of travelers. Recently, Tulum opened a new airport to manage the surge in visitors. However, with more travelers come numerous infrastructure projects and likely traffic congestion. Be prepared and allow extra time, whether you're heading to your hotel or returning to the airport.
