While Paris dazzles year-round, experiencing Christmas here is an enchanting adventure.

Marvel at the festive lights
Paris truly embraces its festive light displays, elevating its ‘City of Light’ moniker. One of the most stunning displays can be found on Avenue De Champs Élysée. From mid-November to January, millions of lights decorate the trees lining the boulevard in a vibrant spectacle, shining from 5 PM to 2 AM daily, and all day long on Christmas and New Year's Day.
A walk along the boulevard’s elegant shops and restaurants offers another unforgettable Parisian experience. Begin at Place de la Concorde and stroll towards the illuminated Arc de Triomphe in the distance. Be sure to check out the lights on Avenue Montaigne and in Montmartre. The Bercy Village also boasts some amazing displays. Not sure where to begin? Climb aboard an open-top Toot Bus tour to see them all.
Embark on a cruise along the River Seine
For a unique view of Christmas in Paris, hop on a cruise along the Seine. The glass-enclosed boat glides over the capital’s iconic river, showcasing all the major landmarks. Cruises run frequently throughout the day, but the evening rides offer more breathtaking scenery. Some daytime cruises include lunch or dinner with champagne.
For an enchanting evening experience, consider a champagne cruise to the Eiffel Tower. You'll be taken up to the Tower’s second floor, where you can soak in the stunning sight of Paris sparkling below. This viewpoint is often more impressive than the top of the tower, and you’ll avoid the long lines.
Cruises can last up to three hours and provide a romantic, atmospheric way to enjoy Christmas in Paris.
Browse for gifts at the Christmas Markets
Christmas Markets in Paris boast stunning backdrops, architectural marvels, and historic squares, providing opportunities to purchase unique, handcrafted gifts.
There are plenty of local delicacies to sample, but few compare to the French version of mulled wine, Vin Chaud. This warm, slightly sweet red wine infused with cinnamon and spices is like Christmas in a cup.
One of the largest Christmas markets is at La Défense, but bigger isn't always better. The most enchanting is the Marché de Noël Notre Dame in the charming Square Viviana near the Latin Quarter. Additionally, the market at Jardin des Tuileries is a beloved Parisian tradition, celebrating the ‘Magic of Christmas’. Be sure to save some space afterward for a rich chocolat chaud at nearby Angelina Paris; it's thick, chocolatey, and utterly decadent.
Ice skate at the Eiffel Tower
Many of the markets I've mentioned feature ice rinks, including Jardin des Tuileries, Champs Élysées, and Trocadéro.
However, few experiences can rival the thrill of skating on the Eiffel Tower. Yes, you can ice skate on the first-floor rink. With a glass of champagne or Vin Chaud in hand and stunning views of Paris below, it’s an unforgettable festive adventure.
Explore festive window displays
A significant part of the allure of Christmas in Paris can be found in the city’s Christmas window displays. Notably, the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann displays have enchanted visitors every year since 1912. Past exhibits have featured mesmerizing animated scenes and light shows where toys appeared as if by magic.
After enjoying the displays, step inside to marvel at the grand Christmas tree located in the shopping mall’s atrium. It stretches towards the dome above, with shimmering streams of light cascading down like rain from the heavens.
Many other stores boast festive window displays worth visiting. My personal favorites are the magnificent Printemps Haussmann and Le Bon Marché, one of the first department stores in the world. If you find yourself in the trendy Le Marais, be sure to check out Le BHV for a delightful spectacle.
Enjoy a classical Christmas concert
Christmas concerts in Paris are held in enchanting venues steeped in centuries of history. You can enjoy classical performances at the Église Saint-Germain de Prés, the oldest abbey in Paris, located in the heart of Saint Germain de Prés.
The Église Saint Eustache, situated near the Louvre in the 1st arrondissement, also offers remarkable festive performances. It boasts one of France’s largest church organs with 8,000 pipes, ensuring its sound carries throughout the space.
Among the most atmospheric venues is the medieval Palais de la Cité. Located on Île de La Cité along the River Seine, this historic residence of French kings houses the gothic gem, Sainte-Chapelle. Experiencing Schubert’s Ave Maria amidst its 1,113 stained glass windows is truly breathtaking.
Experience an operatic Christmas masterpiece
Paris boasts a vibrant theatre district showcasing performances of all types. Few, however, can rival the ambiance of a visit to the Opéra National de Paris.
In 2023, the Opéra Bastille will present Rudolf Nureyev’s Nutcracker for the Christmas season, running from December 8th to January 1st. Set on Christmas Eve with Nureyev’s stunning choreography, it promises to be a magical festive outing. Be sure to book early as tickets are expected to sell out.
Enjoy a night out at the Moulin Rouge
If you’re looking for lively evening entertainment, Paris has plenty to offer. From December 21st for two weeks, the iconic Moulin Rouge hosts its famous Christmas Evening.
Grab your table and let the food and champagne flow as Paris’s most celebrated dancers perform their spectacular Féerie show. With feathers, sequins, high-kicking cancan dancers, and lavish sets, it’s an unforgettable night.
Experience the Festival of Lights
Every year, Paris hosts a Festival of Lights at the Jardin des Plantes. This immensely popular event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors during its two-month annual celebration.
These botanical gardens located in the 5th arrondissement provide the ideal backdrop for a magical winter stroll, adorned with stunning illuminated sculptures. Each year features a different theme, with last year’s focus on the world of bugs and insects.
