Which places are warm in January?
Top warm destinations to visit in January in the Caribbean
1. Jamaica
- Average temperature: 77°F
- Average daily sunshine: 9 hours
What better way to kick off the new year than relaxing on a warm Jamaican beach with a rum punch in hand? January is actually the coolest month in Jamaica, with the average temperature still a pleasant 77°F.
Settle in Montego Bay. While it’s the tourist hub, this area boasts stunning white-sand beaches, mountain and forest adventures, charming towns, and that iconic ‘no problem’ vibe. Eastward at Plantation Cove, the Rebel Salute festival on the 19th and 20th celebrates reggae music.
Among the numerous resorts, my top choice is the Grand Palladium Resort and Spa. This expansive all-inclusive resort features private beaches and one of Jamaica’s largest pools, complete with a wet bar. In Cockpit Country Park, enjoy a bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae amid lush tropical forests. End your day with drinks at Rick’s Cafe on the cliffs of Negril, where you can watch daring divers plunge into the warm waters below.
2. Puerto Rico
- Average temperature: 77°F
- Average daily sunshine: 8 hours
January is a prime time for fun and warm weather in Puerto Rico. Plus, if you're an American citizen, you won’t even need a passport to visit. Enjoying daytime temperatures in the low 80s, the capital San Juan truly shines, especially in the Old Town.
Already vibrant and lively, it really comes alive in January with the week-long Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián. From the 18th to the 24th, streets fill with hundreds of artists and musicians, drawing thousands of visitors for extravagant parades. The warm evening temperatures keep the festivities going late into the night, every night.
Fortunately, San Juan also boasts beaches perfect for relaxation. Escape the crowds at the Blue Flag Balneario de Carolina and lounge under palm and almond trees. For a chic city vibe and convenience, Condado Beach is just a short distance from the Old Town. While you're there, take a Dinogo trip to the nearby Condado Lagoon and look out for its resident manatees.
3. Saint Lucia
- Average temperature: 79°F
- Average daily sunshine: 8 hours
A paradise of untamed nature, St. Lucia is, in my opinion, the most stunning of all the Caribbean islands. The lush landscape, over three-quarters of which is covered in rainforest, thrives on the island's abundant rainfall. However, January marks the dry season, when the rains ease and the sun shines brightly. This is the perfect time to explore the island’s natural wonders before the crowds arrive in February.
The best way to enjoy your time is to head to the beach. Sugar Beach, located within the Viceroy resort, is the island's most famous and breathtaking spot. Nestled between the twin Piton Mountains, its white sands were imported to replace the original gray. Skip the long trek and resort fees by taking a boat trip to access it. My favorite spot is Anse Mamin Beach, a secluded stretch lined with palms that’s challenging to reach but definitely worth the journey.
Visiting St. Lucia without experiencing its adventures would be a missed opportunity. Hike Gros Piton, a moderately challenging trek that rewards you with breathtaking views. Glide through the treetops on a zipline in Babonneau Rainforest, surrounded by hummingbirds, or take a leisurely aerial tram tour through the rainforest. The ascent from the warm lowlands to the ecological park in the forest reserve is an unforgettable experience.

4. Sarasota, Florida
- Average temperature: 61°F
- Average daily sunshine: 11 hours
Florida is the ultimate destination for warm weather in January, boasting stunning beaches and vibrant cities. On the Gulf Coast, Sarasota may not be as famous as Tampa, Miami, or West Palm Beach, but it certainly holds its own in terms of natural beauty, urban charm, and sophistication. In fact, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in Florida.
January brings average temperatures in the low 60s, with highs often reaching the mid-70s, perfect for enjoying the area's outdoor attractions like the lush landscapes of nearby Myakka River State Park. Don't forget your binoculars to catch glimpses of limpkins and ospreys soaring above, as well as alligators and turtles in the waters below.
Sarasota is also a vibrant cultural center; the impressive 66-acre Ringling Museum Complex stands out as its highlight. Now the state art museum of Florida, it features the extensive art collection of railroad tycoon John Ringling, including the Circus Museum and his lavish Venetian Gothic estate, Cà d’Zan.
5. San Luis Obispo, California
- Average temperature: 53°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 10 hours
With its Mediterranean climate and laid-back atmosphere, San Luis Obispo is a January paradise in California. Nestled roughly halfway between the bustling cities of LA and San Francisco, it feels worlds away from either. This prime location also serves as a great starting point for exploring the stunning landscapes of Big Sur.
The mild January weather makes the nearby beaches and trails of Montaña de Oro State Park perfect for adventure. After working up an appetite, head to SLO’s downtown to enjoy restaurant month at its many unique eateries. If you find yourself there on a Thursday, the farmer’s market fills Higuera Street with live music, barbecues, and a festive atmosphere.
Quiet and historic, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the heart of downtown. Wander through the serene gardens and the modest yet well-preserved church to learn about its Chumash tribal and Spanish colonial heritage. On the more eccentric side, Bubblegum Alley is a 15-foot-high, 70-foot-long wall covered in chewed gum. A quirky tourist attraction, its millions of gum pieces are just as gross as you'd expect.
6. South Padre Island, Texas
- Average temperature: 61°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 11 hours
South Padre Island is a favorite getaway for tourists fleeing the winter chill, earning them the nickname Winter Texans. They flock to this subtropical paradise for its mild climate and rich wildlife habitats. Its unique geography—a long, narrow barrier island near the Mexican border—creates a retreat filled with secluded beaches, calm waters, and outdoor adventures.
Explore Laguna Madre on a Dinogo or SUP to immerse yourself in its rich marine life. Opt for a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico or enjoy a dolphin-watching cruise for a more relaxed aquatic experience. For those seeking thrill, a horseback ride along the expansive Seashell Beach is unbeatable.
South Padre Island is also a haven for birdwatchers. The SPI Birding and Nature Center spans 50 acres of boardwalks, bird blinds, and observation towers dedicated to studying birds. Nestled along the Mississippi and Central migratory flyways, it attracts around 500 bird species to its shores. The visitor center and exhibit hall are treasure troves of birding information, so don’t miss the helpful blackboard outside that lists recent sightings.
7. Palm Springs, California
- Average temperature: 58°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 11 hours
Although chilly nights can bring January temperatures in Palm Springs down to the upper 50s, daytime highs typically reach around 70°F—ideal for a warm winter getaway. With the Californian sun shining brightly, the warmth truly comes alive.
With its retro charm, Palm Springs embodies the essence of Californian cool. Once a favorite haunt of the Rat Pack in the ’60s and a quiet retirement spot in the ’80s, it experienced a resurgence in the ’90s. Today, its iconic mid-century architecture—stylish hotels and striking private residences—has turned it into a hub for hipsters and a welcoming place for the LGBTQI+ community.
January is the height of the season, so anticipate lively crowds throughout the city. This is especially true for major events like the International Film Festival and the American Express Golf Tournament. For a unique experience, consider the historical walking tour that reveals the city’s glamorous past beneath its contemporary surface.
For a more challenging trek, hikers should explore the stunning desert landscapes nearby. Coachella Valley (far more than just a music festival), Joshua Tree National Park, and the Indian and Tahquitz Canyons are all breathtaking destinations.
8. Malibu, California
- Average temperature: 46°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 10 hours
California's position in the Sun Belt makes it a haven among the warmest destinations in the US during January. Malibu and the Pacific Palisades are especially charming, though the chilly nights can make it feel colder than it actually is. Daytime temperatures typically hover in the 60s, and rain is infrequent.
Although it lacks the summer sparkle, January is when Malibu’s breathtaking coastline truly shines. Surfers flock to the winter swells at the aptly named Malibu Surfrider Beach. However, Malibu offers much more than this iconic surfing spot.
With 27 miles of breathtaking coves, caves, and cliffs to explore, January is my preferred time for serene coastal strolls. It also marks the peak of whale-watching season. Keep an eye on the ocean as you walk for the tell-tale spouts from passing pods. Prime viewing locations are at Point Dume and El Matador state beaches.
Look inland for views of the remarkable Getty Villa. Almost as stunning as the natural scenery, it rests on a hillside with ocean views and showcases Greek and Roman art.
Best warm places to visit in January in Central America
9. Belize
- Average temperature: 71°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 11 hours
If you're in search of true winter warmth, journey south. January marks the beginning of the dry season in Belize. Daytime temperatures hover in the low 80s, and humidity decreases.
For sunny, clear days, visit the Cayes—over 450 stunning islands dotting the coastline. Enjoy long, relaxing days at 5-star resorts, unwind on palm-lined beaches, and swim or snorkel in enchanting reefs. For diving, the Belize Barrier Reef ranks among the Caribbean’s finest dive spots. Further out, the renowned Big Blue Hole plunges into the depths, where vibrant blue water shifts to deep black.
I've always been enchanted by the Placencia peninsula in the south, celebrated for its pristine beauty. However, be cautious when swimming in the lagoon. While it may host friendly manatees, you might also encounter the more dangerous saltwater crocodiles lurking below.
For a true tropical experience, consider the less-traveled Toledo District. This lush and exotic area is home to tranquil ancient Mayan ruins nestled within the tropical highlands. While many tourists flock to popular sites like Altun Ha, Xunantunich, and Caracol, you can discover the quieter Nim Li Punit, featuring classic pyramids and stone tombs to explore.
10. Nicaragua
- Average temperature: 79°F
- Average hours of daily sun: 11 hours
Located several hundred miles to the south, Nicaragua enjoys delightful January weather. It’s less rugged than Belize yet not as crowded as its southern neighbor, Costa Rica, making it a perfect destination.
The northern coast is lined with wild beaches along the Caribbean Sea, while the Pacific Ocean to the south boasts some of Central America’s finest surf spots. In January, these areas are blessed with offshore winds and minimal rain. San Juan del Sur stands out as the main surf town, though it’s just as known for its vibrant nightlife.
For a more serene experience, venture north past Playa Maderas to stay at Morgan’s Rock Hacienda, which overlooks Playa Ocotal. This beautiful eco-lodge offers a romantic retreat amid the region's rich biodiversity.
If surfing excites you, consider trying it on the slopes of one of Nicaragua’s iconic volcanoes. Journey north to lively León and prepare for an adventure at Cerro Negro volcano. Rent a specially designed board to race down black ash slopes at speeds of 60 mph, all while hearing the rumble of the still-active volcano below.
