1. Punākha Valley, Bhutan
- Why visit in May? Witness the breathtaking bloom of spring flowers set against the stunning Himalayan backdrop.
Bhutan, the country that inspired my journey as a travel writer, is the last of the great Himalayan kingdoms. It’s an ideal destination in May, as the valleys burst into life with vibrant spring blooms.
Punākha Valley is the warmest and most stunning area, renowned for its lush rice paddies that blanket the valley floor and slopes. Towering in the background are the breathtaking peaks of the Himalayas. As you trek through, you'll encounter the powerful Pho and Mo Chhu Rivers, converging at the magnificent Punākha Dzong.
Traveling from Thimphu, the capital where you’ll arrive, is a long but incredible journey. A local bus winds its way over the Dochula Pass, offering chances to capture stunning photos of some of the tallest mountains in the world. Just a heads up—the bus is humorously nicknamed the “vomit comet” for its tendency to upset stomachs. If you're prone to motion sickness, don’t forget your medication!

My absolute favorite city globally bursts into life during late spring, making it one of the premier destinations in Europe for a May visit. With pleasantly warm temperatures that aren't too sweltering, it's the perfect time to explore the city, relax on its beaches, and enjoy outdoor dining.
The Sagrada Familia and Park Güell often fall into the clichéd ‘must-see attractions’ category, but both are truly awe-inspiring. The breathtaking views from the latter only enhance its allure.
Spend your afternoons discovering the grand boulevards of Eixample and the charming narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter. Savor sundowners and tapas at one of the city’s nine beaches at a Chiringuito beach bar. Be sure to spend an evening at Can Paixano, a traditional Barceloneta tavern famous for its delightful cava and tapas, as well as its vibrant and lively patrons.

This year's theme emphasizes sustainability, featuring innovative and eco-friendly practices and technologies.
One of the highlights is the WaterAid Garden, designed by Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn. When on São Miguel, don’t miss the chance to dive into the thermal pools at Furnas Valley. These mineral-rich waters, sourced from a dormant volcano, are believed to have healing properties for various ailments.

Top destinations in May for nature enthusiasts
Whether it’s the Caribbean, South America, or Africa, nature puts on a spectacular display in May. From lush landscapes to vibrant oceans, choose your ideal setting and dive in!
10. The Bahamas
- Why visit in May? Experience swimming with pigs before the busy season kicks in.
With powdery white sand beaches, vibrant blue skies, and gentle breezes, the Bahamas are an ideal vacation spot in May. Before the storm season sets in, the weather is perfectly warm yet comfortable, calm without the threat of hurricanes. Summer crowds haven’t yet arrived, leaving the waters peacefully warm and inviting.
Make sure to see the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay. Located fifty miles from Georgetown on Great Exuma, these adorable pigs are accessible only by boat, but arranging a trip to visit them is quick and hassle-free.
11. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
- Why visit in May? Allow the raw power of nature to rejuvenate your spirit and senses.
Experience the essence of Blue Zone living amidst the stunning jungles, mountains, beaches, and waterfalls of the Nicoya Peninsula. I recommend the beautiful village of Montezuma near the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve as a perfect base. Here, you can unwind, swim, and observe wildlife on its pristine white sand beaches. It’s the picturesque Costa Rica depicted in travel brochures, brought to life in delightful reality.
Be sure to hike to Montezuma Waterfall, located just south of the village. Don’t let the smaller falls at the beginning distract you; continue on to the higher falls for a more spectacular view and fewer crowds. Afterwards, book a beachside table for dinner at Playa de los Artistas, where you can savor fresh cuisine, refreshing cocktails, and the feeling of sand beneath your toes as you dine.
12. Serengeti, Tanzania
- Why visit in May? Witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of the greatest migration on Earth.
There's never a wrong time for a safari in Tanzania. However, to enhance this incredible travel experience, plan your visit during the great wildebeest migration. It's truly one of nature’s most breathtaking displays.
Visiting in May offers a fantastic opportunity to witness the onset of the migration, though it’s not guaranteed. Depending on seasonal rainfall, the wildebeests typically begin their 500-mile journey between late April and early June. They start from the birthing and feeding grounds in the southeastern Serengeti and migrate north through the Moru Kopjes. This is the area to watch closely.
If you miss the migration, don’t fret. Head to Arusha and either hike up or take a flight over Mount Kilimanjaro. Alternatively, visit the Ngorongoro Crater to explore the diverse wildlife within the world’s largest intact (and thankfully dormant) volcanic crater.
