Top 12 Resorts in Florida
The Breakers
The Breakers in Palm BeachThe Breakers stands as a pinnacle of luxury, sophistication, and history, nestled in one of America's most exclusive neighborhoods.
Prices can vary significantly during Palm Beach’s social season, which spans roughly from Thanksgiving to Easter.
Recognized in Dinogo’s Top 500 Hotels of the Year, The Breakers has been a hallmark of Florida resorts since its establishment by railroad tycoon Henry Flagler in 1896 during the Gilded Age. It continues to attract discerning modern travelers, earning accolades from T+L readers as a top resort in Florida in the 2023 World’s Best Awards.
“I’ve visited The Breakers countless times, and it never loses its charm,” says Nikolopoulos, a resident of Palm Beach County for 25 years. The ambiance is lavish, reminiscent of a scene from The Gilded Age, yet there’s a warm hospitality that makes you feel truly cared for.”
Despite its prestigious reputation, The Breakers is refreshingly welcoming and family-oriented. Generations flock here year after year for holidays, special events, and classic relaxation. “My kids have practically grown up at The Breakers’ Family Entertainment Center and that iconic beach,” shares Nikolopoulos. The resort features an arcade, water sports rentals, and activities for kids, tweens, teens, and families alike.
Prepare for golf, tennis, water sports, shopping, an exceptional spa, a private beach, and multiple pools (consider booking one of the 25 daytime bungalows for the ultimate relaxation). The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens
Photo by Joe Vaughn / The Collector Luxury Inn & GardensThe Collector serves as an ideal launching point to explore America’s oldest city, perfectly blending history with luxury.
The Collector's boutique atmosphere makes it perfect for a serene and intimate getaway, offering historical charm and convenient access to St. Augustine’s downtown Historic District.
The Collector Luxury Inn consists of nine historic buildings dating back to the late 18th century, now adorned with modern luxuries. During my stay, I found it hard to leave the property — St. Augustine is my second-favorite city in Florida (after Palm Beach, of course).
The 30 rooms and suites each have their own unique decor, featuring artifacts and antiques, coquina walls, cozy fireplaces, and restored hardwood floors. The grounds beckon you to relax for a while (perhaps with a cocktail from The Well Bar). Don't forget to unwind and chat with fellow guests by the heated outdoor pool and fire pits.
While the property offers an enticing and private atmosphere, one of The Collector’s highlights is its close proximity to St. Augustine’s downtown Historic District. The city’s charming cobblestone streets, delightful shops, and historical sites are just a short stroll away. Whether you're drawn to the history, romance, luxurious accommodations, or the unique charm of St. Augustine, The Collector is undoubtedly among Florida's finest resorts.

The Equestrian Hotel
Photo by Ethan Tweedie / The Equestrian HotelFeaturing a horse-shaped bar, stunning views of equestrian events at the open-air Grand Arena, and surrounded by lush countryside.
This isn’t your typical Florida resort; The Equestrian Hotel is a sanctuary for horse lovers in the Horse Capital of the World.
Situated between Gainesville, Orlando, and Tampa, The Equestrian Hotel offers a luxurious experience within the 378-acre World Equestrian Center, showcasing some of the country’s finest equestrians.
“A luxury hotel right on the showgrounds of the World Equestrian Center is the kind of hospitality experience you never knew you needed,” says Nikolopoulos. “Whether you're a horse lover or not, it’s impossible not to appreciate the access to daily professional and collegiate equestrian events, like dressage and Western riding. The Equestrian Hotel offers a tranquil and luxurious retreat from which to enjoy these events in style.”
Nikolopoulos highlights the appealing Central Florida location of The Equestrian Hotel. “Since one can’t survive on horse shows alone, the hotel’s charm also lies in its closeness to Ocala’s natural hot springs and beautiful natural areas,” she adds.
Key Features:
- 248 elegantly designed rooms and suites
- Diverse dining options including two unique restaurants, a bakery, in-room dining, and a Key West-inspired poolside bar

The Gasparilla Inn & Club
The Gasparilla Inn & ClubFew places still embody the charm and simplicity of Old Florida, but The Gasparilla Inn certainly does.
The Gasparilla Inn operates seasonally (from early October to mid-July) and enjoys a devoted clientele, resulting in limited availability during peak times, particularly holidays and weekends. Occasionally, a dress code may be enforced.
Since its opening in the early 1900s, The Gasparilla Inn has been a charming Gulf Coast landmark, representing gentility and tradition — with a relaxed, beachy vibe (it is located on an island, after all). Guests are greeted with warmth and treated to the elegance of Old Florida (not that I’m hinting at any family ties to the nearby Useppa Island Club… just saying).
Nestled in Boca Grande, famous for its exceptional tarpon fishing and unspoiled beaches, The Gasparilla Inn offers much more than its quaint beach-town vibe might suggest. It features guest rooms and cottages, a beach club, a spa, and a variety of activities that highlight the area’s natural beauty. Be sure to visit the Pink Elephant, a beloved establishment cherished by generations of returning families for over 60 years.
Key Features:

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort
Four SeasonsIf you have small children, you don’t have to stay late at the parks — enjoy the nightly Walt Disney World fireworks from the comfort of your private terrace with park views.
To fully enjoy the resort’s proximity to the parks and its extensive on-site amenities, a stay of several days is recommended.
T+L readers have repeatedly voted Four Seasons Resort Orlando into the World’s Best Awards for good reason. “The resort is just a shuttle ride from the Walt Disney World parks, but it’s also a destination in its own right,” shares Nikolopoulos. “Our family loves the five-acre water park, where we float on tubes and navigate a lazy river while dodging waterfalls. It’s the most enjoyable experience you can have without wearing mouse ears.”
While there’s plenty to enjoy at the resort, many guests choose this location for its close proximity to Florida’s renowned theme parks; it’s the next best thing to staying overnight in Cinderella Castle. Four Seasons Resort Orlando features a Disney Planning Center in the lobby, complimentary luxury motor coach transportation to the parks, and character breakfasts on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Plus, guests enjoy early access to any park for 30 minutes each day.
Elizabeth Rhodes, T+L's special projects editor, recently experienced the resort and highlights the on-site dining: "Capa, the rooftop steakhouse and bar, is a must-try. Where else can you enjoy Michelin-starred cuisine while watching Disney fireworks?"
The Highlights:
- Family-oriented amenities and accommodations
- Situated in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, within Walt Disney World Resort
- 20 miles from Orlando International Airport
- Rooftop steakhouse with stunning panoramic views
- Complimentary 'Kids for All Seasons' camp for ages 4-12
- Rates begin at $900 per night
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa
Little Palm Island Resort & SpaLittle Palm Island is the only private island resort in the U.S. Accessible solely by private boat or seaplane, it offers an extraordinary escape into luxury.
During peak season (January to June), a three-night deposit is required at booking, with the remaining balance due 30 days prior to arrival.
If the Florida Keys are a getaway, then Little Palm Island, situated off the coast of Little Torch Key, is the ultimate retreat within that getaway. This four-acre paradise is both exclusive and secluded, yet provides all the modern amenities of a luxury resort, including fine dining, a full-service spa, and activities that connect guests with the stunning natural beauty of the Keys (think kayaking, backcountry fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and eco-tours). It’s no surprise that T+L readers voted it the No. 1 resort in Florida in the 2023 World’s Best Awards.
“Little Palm Island feels wonderfully distant from reality, in the best way possible, making it hard to believe it’s part of the Florida Keys,” says Nikolopoulos. “This tiny private island may be small, but it’s bursting with romance, featuring thatched-roof bungalows with private beaches, terraces with copper tubs overlooking the water, and an atmosphere of castaway bliss. Plus, who can resist the charming Key deer peeking through the mangroves?”
The suites are housed in 15 bungalows, each featuring lavish tropical decor, ocean views, a fire pit, an outdoor shower, and a copper soaking tub. Due to its cozy size and high demand, Little Palm Island often sells out, so it’s wise to book your stay well in advance, particularly during peak seasons. Additionally, the cancellation policy is stringent, offering no refunds within 30 days of arrival.
The Essentials:
- Daily motor yacht service available between the island and the mainland from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Located near Little Torch Key, Florida
- 27 miles from Key West International Airport
- Children under 18 are not allowed on the island
- Rates start at $2,800 per night during peak season
The Boca Raton
Michael Stavaridis / The Boca RatonThe Boca Raton’s recent $200 million renovation brings a contemporary feel while preserving the character and charm of architect Addison Mizner’s original 1926 design.
Membership to the Boca Raton Club is an option, resulting in a blend of hotel guests and affluent locals on the property.
The Boca Raton consists of five distinct hotels within a single resort, offering something for everyone. All accommodations are upscale, including the adults-only Yacht Club and the Tower, located near Harborside Pool Club, which caters to groups and families. The resort even features apartment-style options at Bungalows, perfect for extended stays.
“I’ve witnessed many transformations of this iconic hotel, but the latest renovation strikes a perfect balance between history and modernity,” says Nikolopoulos. “I adore the expansive views of the sea and city from the new Tower suites, yet I also appreciate the elevated, exclusive atmosphere of the Yacht Club, which is so close to the water.”
Dinner presents a delightful dilemma: “There are 16 dining options available,” she notes. “However, nothing compares to the excitement of staying in and having the robot butler bring snacks and games.” Yes, there’s a robot butler, and it even shares jokes!
You’ll discover a stunning beach, eight pools—including a 450-foot lazy river and waterslides—a fitness center, shopping, and an extensive Racquet Club featuring 16 Hydro-Grid tennis courts and six pickleball courts, along with a full-service tennis concierge and expert coaching. Plus, there’s a championship private golf course set within the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. And if you don’t indulge in Spa Palmera—the resort’s award-winning, 50,000-square-foot spa inspired by Alhambra Palace—can you truly say you visited The Boca Raton?
The Essentials:
- Established in 1926 and designed by the famous architect Addison Mizner
- Located in Boca Raton, Florida

- Set on Lake Boca Raton with a beach club on the Atlantic Ocean accessible by water taxi
- $53 nightly resort fee and $55 nightly valet parking fee

The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection
Jeff Herron / Vinoy St. Petersburg Resort and Golf ClubWho can resist a historic waterfront resort painted in a vibrant shade of pink?
The Vinoy is situated in downtown St. Petersburg, rather than St. Pete Beach, meaning there’s no direct beach access. However, a stunning pool with cabana rentals awaits you.
The Vinoy has a rich history of making headlines, from its glamorous New Year’s Eve opening in 1925 to recent news about its significant renovations and rebranding. This cheerful pink hotel is meant to capture attention. Yet, it also knows how to maintain privacy, frequently hosting celebrities, athletes, American presidents, and some of the most well-traveled guests in the world.
This hotel blends historic charm with modern luxury. With its prime location in downtown St. Petersburg, you'll see a vibrant mix of locals and hotel guests relaxing on the front porch rocking chairs, shopping at the Sunni Spencer boutique, and enjoying meals and drinks at the hotel's five dining venues. Additionally, the hotel features a championship golf course, marina, and full-service spa, with rooms offering stunning views of Tampa Bay, the marina, or beautifully landscaped gardens.
Make sure to stroll into town for some exploration. And please, for the sake of this East Coast writer, take the 10-minute journey to Bandit Coffee Co for a floral latte, which is truly the best coffee I’ve ever had the pleasure to sip.
The Essentials:
- Luxury resort with historic Mediterranean Revival architecture
- Recently underwent a major renovation
- Located in St. Petersburg, Florida
- 20 miles from Tampa International Airport
- Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places
- Rates start at $451 per night
The Colony Palm Beach
The ColonyThe Colony, with its iconic pink facade, perfectly embodies the youthful and vibrant essence of Instagrammable Palm Beach.
Locals (like me!) flock to The Colony’s weekly happenings, including live music on weekends, Sunday-night bingo, and Monday-night trivia, alongside a rotating lineup of pop-ups, trunk shows, and resident artists.
With deep-rooted connections to Palm Beach since 1947 and a focus on ongoing revitalization, The Colony has undergone numerous transformations, and its current version is the finest yet.
From the whimsical hand-painted wallpaper in the Living Room to the beautifully designed bungalows, penthouses, and residential-style villas—each crafted in collaboration with local creatives or internationally acclaimed designers, and sometimes both—the hotel is filled with so many intricate details that you could easily spend hours soaking them all in.
The vibrant Palm Beach social scene thrives at The Colony, promising stylish surroundings infused with island nostalgia. Enjoy a day by the pool and secure a reservation at the indoor-outdoor Swifty’s. (And do let me know what you can add to our trivia team!)
The Essentials:
- Iconic pink luxury hotel founded in 1947
- 89 rooms, including suites and residences designed for long-term stays
- Located in Palm Beach, Florida
- Six miles from Palm Beach International Airport
- Just steps away from Worth Avenue and the Atlantic Ocean
- Rates begin at $899 per night during high season and $499 per night during low season
Sunset Key Cottages
Sunset Key CottagesTo relax after enjoying the lively atmosphere of the Conch Republic, you can pair a visit to mainland Key West with a few days of rest and rejuvenation at Sunset Key Cottages.
The resort provides an “accessibly remote” experience, allowing you to feel separated from Key West while remaining close by. A boat departs from Opal Key to the island at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour, from 6:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., and returns from Sunset Key’s dock on the hour and half-hour (after 11 p.m., the boat runs upon request).
Located just a seven-minute boat ride from its sibling property, Opal Key, on the mainland, Sunset Key Cottages is a 27-acre resort featuring 40 private cottages, a spa, and two dining options—a poolside tiki bar and a beachfront restaurant—on a private island approximately 500 yards from the western edge of Key West.
Situated in a serene escape while being centrally located, the resort has received recognition from T+L readers at the World’s Best Awards for several years and is featured in T+L’s Top 500 Hotels.
As Nikolopoulos describes it, “This private island resort just a stone's throw from Key West feels like a getaway to small-town America, where you can let the kids play outside all day (you might catch a glimpse of them when the ice cream truck rolls by).” His favorite moment of the day is dining on the beach at Latitudes while watching a breathtaking sunset.
There’s wonderfully little to do other than relax and enjoy the surroundings, though the resort does offer a spa, pool, beach (a rarity in the Keys), tennis courts, beach volleyball, fitness classes, and family-friendly activities on weekends.
The Essentials:
- 40 private cottages located on a private island just off the coast of Key West
- Found in the Florida Keys
- 4 miles from Key West International Airport
- Complimentary 24-hour shuttle boat service to Key West
- Rates start at $799 per night (off season) and $1799 per night (in season)
Eau Palm Beach
Eau Palm BeachThe 42,000-square-foot spa at Eau Palm Beach is, in my opinion, the finest in the region. You'll find delightful features like a Wishing Well at the entrance for setting intentions, refreshing dipping pools, sunlit hanging chairs in the garden, and irresistibly delicious mini cupcakes (trust me, don’t resist).
While the oceanfront location is unbeatable, the hotel is a bit away from the lively center of Palm Beach, making it a quieter retreat away from the town's hustle and bustle.
Eau Palm Beach exudes an effortlessly chic vibe, though it’s clear that a great deal of thought and care went into crafting this fabulous hotel. With the stunning Atlantic Ocean gracing the east side, the vibrant guest rooms, designed by the celebrated Jonathan Adler, offer an allure all their own.
Families and couples are attracted to the resort’s offerings, including private beach access, children's activities, eight dining options on-site, and complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, bike rentals, and non-motorized water sports gear.
You might even spot me there! Eau Palm Beach is home to my favorite spa in the area—someone has to help work out the knots from all this keyboard time.
The Details:
- Modern luxury resort featuring interiors by Jonathan Adler
- Located in Palm Beach, Florida
- 11 miles from Palm Beach International Airport
- Includes an on-site spa, tennis courts, water sports, children's programs, and various dining options
- Rates begin at $420 per night
The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island
The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia IslandThis is the epitome of North Florida — tranquil, secluded, and natural, with a touch of Southern hospitality, distinctly different from the rest of the state.
As of February 2024, The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, is undergoing a transformation, meaning the indoor pool is currently closed for conversion into a luxury fitness and wellness center.
This luxurious oceanfront resort is part of the Sea Islands chain along the Eastern Seaboard, showcasing a relaxed, marshy elegance that perfectly reflects its surroundings.
True to Ritz-Carlton standards, this Amelia Island experience emphasizes luxury with its world-class spa, championship golf course, serene oceanfront pool, fitness center, shopping options, and an array of outdoor activities including tennis, biking, and water sports.

- Situated in Amelia Island, Florida
- 27 miles from Jacksonville International Airport

Important Information Before You Go
- Florida is a seasonal destination. The link between Florida and summer vacations is strong, but in many areas, peak season occurs during the cooler winter months. While beaches and theme parks are popular in summer, spring break also attracts large crowds. Resort rates can vary widely between peak and off-peak seasons, but I believe there's no wrong time to visit Florida.
- Prepare for hurricanes. Don't forget about the Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 to November 30. While storms may not always form, it's wise to book with flexible cancellation options and be ready for possible rain during these months.
- The sun sets in the west. This holds true in Florida as well. Many visitors staying in oceanfront hotels on the East Coast expect to see breathtaking sunsets over the water, only to be disappointed when they discover they need to rise at sunrise for such views.
- Not all resorts are family-friendly. Some resorts cater to romantic getaways without children (like Little Palm Island), while others are designed for families (such as The Breakers). When searching for top-rated family-friendly resorts in Florida and the U.S., look for solid kids' programs if you're bringing children along.
