Best road trip for mountain and sea loversCairo–Nuweiba; 647 km (402 miles); allow five days to complete the route
The Sinai is essential for any trip to Egypt and serves as a picturesque road trip destination as well. This journey takes you from the bustling city of Cairo along highways that wind through breathtaking mountains, with glimpses of the Red Sea coast just out of sight.
After leaving the city and passing through the tunnel into Sinai, a narrow road leads you to the coast. You'll drive past the beach towns of Ras Sudr and Ras Matarma, with opportunities to stop in Abu Zenima and Ras Abu Rudeis for stunning coastal photos.
Five hours into your drive, you’ll arrive at St Katherine's Protectorate and the renowned St Catherine's Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and your first significant stop. If you enjoy hiking, set aside a day to tackle Egypt’s highest peak – Gebel Katharina (Mt Catherine). Try to start your hike before sunrise to witness the dawn from the 2,629 m (8,625 ft) summit and then explore the biblical sites around the peak throughout the day.
Once back on the road, it’s another 90-minute drive through the mountains until you reach Dahab, your first overnight stop by the beach. Aim to spend at least two or three days in Dahab to fully appreciate this laid-back beach town. Enjoy diving in the Blue Hole, kitesurfing at the Blue Lagoon, and savoring delicious food and drinks along the beach promenade.
After soaking up the sun, hop back in your car and head north for an hour to reach Nuweiba. This is the final stop on your journey – the ideal place to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with nature. All desert camps here are right by the sea, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and majestic mountains. There's no better way to unwind than by stargazing at night and waking up to the beach in the morning.
Planning tip: Be aware that the route is lengthy and cell service can be spotty.
