Top Dining Experiences in Old San Juan

My love for the charming cobblestone streets of Old San Juan began years ago. This stunning locale is bursting with culture, perhaps due to its colorful buildings adorned with wrought-iron balconies overflowing with vibrant flowers, or its rich history dating back to the 16th century. And let’s not forget the abundance of cats!
Whatever the reason, I have an enduring affection for Old San Juan. The hospitality of the locals and their commitment to preserving their culture is unmatched. Strolling through the narrow alleys, you'll encounter their pride showcased in museums and galleries filled with art, not to mention the incredible restaurants! Puerto Ricans truly know how to savor their meals. Join me as I explore a few of my top recommendations.
Marmalade Restaurant & Wine Bar
If you’re a true culinary enthusiast, don’t miss the opportunity to experience Marmalade. This trendy eatery, complete with a stylish wine bar, is the perfect spot to see and be seen. Although it can be a bit pricey and noisy during peak times, the exquisite Caribbean-inspired dishes are absolutely worth it—make sure to try the handmade truffle pasta and their renowned white bean soup. It’s advisable to make reservations at this beloved establishment!

Café El Punto
My favorite spot, Café El Punto, is a laid-back place perfect for grabbing drinks or savoring delicious Creole-inspired dishes such as their chicken-filled mashed plantains and delightful avocado prawns. I've also heard fantastic things about their whole fried snapper! For appetizers, you can't go wrong with their sampler plate brimming with fritters, dumplings, and fried cheese—so tasty! Complete your meal with a mango or papaya frappé (feel free to add a shot of rum if you like!), making it an excellent choice for lunch or dinner.

Casa Cortés ChocoBar
Although I haven't experienced it firsthand, I've been told that Casa Cortés offers the finest chocolate martini on the island! In addition to their chocolatey beverages, you can indulge in homemade grilled cheese with chocolate, fries paired with chocolate ketchup, or churros drizzled with chocolate sauce. It all sounds divine and like a perfect way to wrap up your afternoon before heading back to your ship.
Café Don Ruiz
Speaking of chocolate, I’m reminded of this delightful dessert spot where you can enjoy a flawless café con leche alongside an irresistible Mallorca sweet bread sandwich. You absolutely must try their Mallorca sandwich! For a refreshing option, go for their banana smoothies or enjoy a frozen hazelnut cream mocha while basking in the industrial-chic atmosphere of this trendy café.

Punto de Vista Restaurant & Bar
You can never go wrong with great food paired with a stunning view, right? Punto de Vista is a rooftop restaurant/bar located on the 5th floor of Hotel Milano. While the casual decor of the non-air-conditioned rooftop bar might be simple, the views of Old San Juan and the cruise ship pier are breathtaking! They also serve fantastic bar fare, including fish tacos and mofongo (fried plantains)—I highly recommend the pork version, it’s so tasty! Plus, Punto de Vista hosts a regular happy hour featuring refreshing drink specials like Mojitos.
